Those kind of dudes have an aura about them.

We had Bruce Crandall at one of our dinning outs after a deployment. He was the MOH pilot “snake” that kept flying in to retrieve wounded at LZ x-ray. (We Were Soldiers).

My wife likes to tell the story how she grabbed his ass. We took a pic with him and he pushed her hand down and told her to “hold here” on his ass cheek. When people ask, you did it?! She says.. “yeah, he’s a MOH recipient, of course I did!”

I knew it was a stagnant body of water but didn’t know it was an oxbow lake though.

    That's awesome!

We had Adrian Cronauer come and be our guest at a "back in time to '69" themed combat dining in. I led decorations, and even made a period approved uniform. I scored 3 deuces drivers, and everyone had to "deploy" to the site out on Camp Bullis. Adrian was awesome, and loved the deuce ride in. He was off-limits during the shenanigans, but laughed his head off at us.

I was declared a "heavy machine gunner" because I brought a 5-gallon water fire extinguisher and a hand pump to the water fight. I had two of my Airmen standing by as "loaders" - one filled the tank, and the other went nuts with a bike pump.

I need to go looking for the pics...

Does seem more like “a dining in antics,” which usually pissed me off. We had to do a skateboard race. I got volunteered for our company. When a dude pushed up and rugged on my blues, I ripped his shit. I can play games with the fatigues on but blues are too expensive for that nonsense. Fuck dining ins. Can’t think of one where we didn’t almost get in a fight.

Not sure how the USMC does them but the Army does it as a lock in. Drinks are all but forced down you, can’t get up for the first 1-2 hours during the “ceremony.” So dudes piss in the empty pictures. We finally got to go hit the bathroom and came back to a table of piss pictures from the other companies. That was the last one I attended and CSM and to prevent the brawl.

Missed a prime opportunity to point out how we all have fuck ups on a grand scale. Pretty much every branch, except the CG, has some real winners in the area of mayhem.

Statistically speaking, there should be at least 1-2 in there. WTF.

Marine Corps Mess Nights and Dinning Ins are a formal, heritage and tradition filled evening. Very regimented and very respected. Lots of booze but with set breaks to relieve oneself. Capped off with cigars at the end, not optional back in my day but I'm sure they are now.

Ours aren’t optional either, just didn’t have any that got planned after that one.

Our dining in’s are “formal,” in that we wear blues and the ceremony is respected. But after that it’s all antics. Because it’s nothing but NCOs and Officers, no spouses, I think they tend to take them too far.

Also I have stick up my ass in uniform so there’s that. :D

Dining outs are all full press with spouses and really only minimally “cut loose” at the very end, if you decide to stay. Usually you’ll see whatever guest of honor and the old man (BN cdr) on the floor half tossed along with random people. More like a wedding reception dance at that point.

For us that was a dining out - formal and with guests. A dining in was formal, military only, and a combat dining out was an excuse to get stupid with field gear and toy guns.

The combat dining ins I’ve attended were all a riot. The point is to have fun and let loose in a semi-controlled environment.

For us, a combat dining in is when you’re at the DFAC down range, and it get mortared.

Being the only Eng company in the BDE always ensured we were with the BDE HQ and doing route clearance between the fobs and cops. Couple IEDs go off and suddenly everyone wants routes cleared. :jerkoff:
