Tips to prevent this from happening again?

I got back from being away for school and saw once again on my front bumper where water drains to it had rust forming again. Last time I was home (4 months ago) I took a scotch brite pad to it with purple power and took away all the rust then waxed my whole bumper but somehow this happened again. I don’t particularly want to buy a new bumper either so any tips

You bumper is not made of stainless steel. It’s chrome plated steel if it’s a factory bumper.

Best way I think would be to wash your car regularly or store it under a roof. I'm thinking if you let it sit after its been soaked, then this is bound to happen.

Unless you're trying to spend some money and time to remove the bumper and have it coated with some chemical to prevent this?

 

I got 11 ish days of working room till I go back to school should be more then enough time to take my bumper off and do all that

 

Rust:



Waxing it is a very temporary solution.

Sand it all down to remove ALL the rust. then repaint it, inside and our with like 20 coats of paint and 17 layers of clear coat and that will only delay the formation of rust, lol

The knowledge you gain from understanding you don't have a stainless steel bumper is actually pretty valuable. Some might say... helpful.

 

Remove the rust and then apply a coat of Fluid Film.

 

Sounds ugly on the front bumper

 

No. Most good quality stainless won’t rust. Wasn’t sure if you had changed it. You can make a paste out of baking soda and water and scrub it it will help remove the rust. But unfortunately at this point there are already imperfections in the chrome plating any moisture while it sits will cause that rust to appear again and again unless you have it replated. You could use wd40 on it while it’s sits and that may delay the process but at this point it will continue to come back. You just have to keep cleaning and recoating each time it happens.

 

You know that fluid film stays wet, right?

FF on an exterior surface would be a fairly messy idea.

How about just painting the top part of my bumper with Berliner?

You could do that. Imo just pull the bumper clean and scuff really good and just line the whole thing. You could even use like duplicolor do it yourself bedliner or one of the other products.

 

For best results, you'll want to sand off the chrome coating and essentially start from scratch.

If you have an angle grinder with a flap disc, that'll be a 2 minute job. If you have an electric sander, that'll work, too. hand sanding you'll probably end up just scuffing it up enough to smooth it out and take off the top layer, then re-paint.

 

Yeah I’ve done paint work before I think I’ll hit it with a flap disc and then do some rustoleum bed liner on it (that’s what I’ve done my grille with works well
