My 2006 Tacoma brake upgrade (EDITED!!)

Here ya go. The m12 to m10 adapter took me a bit to find. Ebay was then only place I found that had it. All the others could be obtained locally. Will need 2 of each

Bookmarked, for when I'm due for brakes. Straight forward enough mod, I like it. Was confused on the first post for the booster, couldn't figure out why you used a tundra booster, was just the pic angle. I see it's a double drum now.

What's the bore of the tacoma MC and the tundra? I don't think anyone mentioned that, or I'm totally missing it while reading.

Side note, HRP is awesome.

 

What year tundra did you get the parts from? According to rock auto but 04 and 2000 tundras have the same bore and port size as the Tacoma.

 

so what I can fine on info, the master cylinder/booster is from an 07+ tundra
But there disk front and rear. Comparing op’s pics to what I’m finding

the Tacoma master is 13/16” bore and m10 lines
The tundra (07+) is 15/16” bore and m12 lines
The tundra (00-04) is 13/16”bore and m10 lines

 

Well the line size is moot, since it's going to be reduced no matter what. So mostly depends if the 07+ MC is worth it or not. Otherwise I don't see why the stock MC wouldn't work, assuming it bolts to the double drum booster.

 

Yes, but the 07+ has disk brakes front and rear. For our trucks that will be too much pressure for the rear drums.
The pictures of what op installed are the same as 07+ while the mc bolts are in a different location.

 

Oh yeah, sorry I had 2 trains of thought going on. So, bolt locations different, you need the pre 07 MC for drums. I'm just kinda waiting for all 4 to shit out on me, so I can put discs on the rear, so I would be looking for the 07+ then rear parts from something for rear discs. I know someone did some conversion, don't recall where I saw it. I'm a ways down the road before I'm going to have to do a brake job though. Just in general, I find the stock brakes "ok", and I have a disdain for drums, figured at some point I would kill a flock of birds with a bucket of stones.

 

The master cylinder and booster are from a 2007-2018 Tundra!

The Tundra master cylinder is 2mm bigger than the Tacoma master cylinder. The biggest gain by far was from the Tundra dual diaphragm brake booster.

The Tacoma master cylinder does not bolt up to the Tundra booster. The Tacoma master cylinder's mounting holes are approximately 1/2" further apart.

 

Line size is not moot as a master cylinder with a bigger bore will move more fluid than a master cylinder with a smaller bore regardless of line size, the fluid will just move faster within the smaller line.

 

Wrong. A master cylinder for disc brakes does not put out too much pressure for drum brakes. The only difference is a master cylinder for drum brakes has a residual valve which makes the brakes come on quicker by applying more line pressure when the system is at rest. I know this because on my 1932 Ford I used a master cylinder for disc brakes and added residual valves in the lines because the Ford had drums at every corner.

 

So do you think with the 07+ Tundra master cylinder we would benefit by putting in a 10lb Wilwood residual valve for the rear drums?

 

Yes. I think the application would benefit from it.

Edit: I have no idea of the affect of a residual valve in a ABS system. I'm leaving my truck's brakes as they are. They're absolutely fantastic. IF I did add a residual valve I would add it after the ABS system.

I didn't see some of this post previously... how are you planning on extending the Tundra's brake booster actuating rod? Wait a minute, is that the booster rod's extension under the wrench? What parts did you use to achieve that?

 

Your m10 female x m12 Male adapter has a bubble flare on the m12 side. Not sure if that'll work correctly.

 

Long story.. i can try to find it! It was part of a kit for the swap which came with brake lines but I didnt want to swap my lines. I got my parts for this swap over a year ago but havemt made time to swap it. If you can find a supply place with metric parts like rod and threaded coupling you can make one

 

I hope for my sake you are wrong .. I have my truck all taken apart, whats the difference?
Edit: I see the difference, I think I am wrong..
So I went a different route after serching all day for the right m12x1 to m10x1 adapter. I changed the whole lines that have the right ends on both sides
