I use A-trac all the time when wheelin, I just turn it on and leave it. Occasional, the locker is needed, and the locker plus front A-Trac is nearly unstoppable. We were on a trip this past weekend, several trucks with open front and rear lockers, their fronts were no where near as effective as those with A-Trac.

Ultimately, I believe front and rear selectable lockers are the best for serious wheelin. I am I going to put a locker in the front of my Tacoma? only if it is in a solid axle :D. For what I plan on doing in my truck, the current TRD OFF ROAD package of traction options will do .

And the short answer is no... for simple reason.
A-trac will work as long as single wheel have enough usable traction to pull the vehicle.
Because when one side is breaking to transfer power to opposite side, a wheel that has brakes applied to,will provide no force. Hence its up to one wheel on the opposite side to provide tractive force.
Fully locked vehicle combines all 4 wheels traction to get enough force to move.

Sorry but there is no substitute for F/R lockers. Not in my neck of the woods. :D

Ummm, the A-TRAC doesn't just work on one tire per axle. The brakes are applied to the wheel with no traction (in the air, for example)... How does a tire in the air provide force to move your truck?

I may not fully understand but using the rear locker with a-trac seems redundant for the rear traction purposes at least.

When it is locked both wheels are given the same amount of torque so breaking one side would just effect the otherside as well right?

As I understand it this is not correct. A-TRAC combines all wheels traction as well. What it does is limit spin, and therefore lost torque, by braking the wheel that *would* spin, causing the differential to keep torque flowing to all four wheels. A lightly braked wheel will still provide movement assuming it has enough traction to grab.

This is the same reason lightly applying brakes during wheelspin can sometimes get you moving again as well.

A-TRAC would not engage because the wheels are locked and spinning at the same rate. A-TRAC only engages if the wheels on a given differential are spinning at different rates.

With a locked rear, A-TRAC would essentially only affect the front wheels.

That is very rewarding to hear, thank you very much!

Also, the other video of the rock crawling 4Runner, was great!

FYI, A-TRAC comes already on our trucks... and a front locking differential is not free. I just want folks to know that Toyota has given us a great tool for the price of a truck we were already going to buy. I don't think you need to add a front locker to an A-TRAC truck... save that money for other stuff! Right?

You're confusing A-TRAC for VSC. In Tacomas, there is a VSC-Off button. I do not know if Tundras have the same mechanism.

Why do you want to spin, and thus chew up, your Dad's expensive tires on his expensive truck?

    1) read the manual
    2) push the button (you can open both differentials to spin the tires)
    3) then wreck the truck...your dad must love it when you drive it?

Yea I'm pretty much clueless but I was just wondering how u turn that thing off since It's fun to spin the tires. Specially when I don't have to pay for them.

In air nothing works unless Toyota comes up with antygravity drive.
But here 4 locked truck shines. Watch both videos from MOAB and compare locked LC to Atrac 4runner. There is load of differences how both vehicle transition between 4 wheel traction into two wheel traction . there is your answer why 4 wheels locked is much better then Atrac ;)
Not even a competition. If that rock was little more slippery that 4runner would need new body work.

I,m knot sure if the rear is disabled or it's just the fact that when locked in the rear the system will not see a single spinning wheel, no need for A-Trac :D.

I agree 100% that trading up just for A-TRAC makes no sense. This should really only be a consideration for people in the market for a new Taco for other reasons.

What he said!!! Wait until you have your own truck to do with it as you please. :)

If and when you have teenage kids wanting to borrow your truck or car, only to find out that all they want to do is drive LIKE THEY own it what would you do?

    p.s. I mean no offense :)

I was just kidding. It's just that every time I drive it I tell him that his truck is ball less and can't spin the tires and my v-6 can. I'll have to check the manual next time I get behind the wheel.

There's no arguing the capabilities of a F/R locked vehicle...that's a long proven design.

A-TRAC is new and has certainly not been as proven to as many people.

And that may be the crux of the matter - A-TRAC doesn't have a lot of believers yet because people don't have much experience with it. Myself included - I don't have experience with it, and I don't believe in it. But I have an open mind and intend to test it. We'll see how it does. Maybe I'll become a convert.
