The AC was still more popular than the DC for the 05' model until probably '08. If you live anywhere north of I40 (above NC/KY/TN/OK/AZ) you start getting more 4wd versions. for the south I can understand they are rare but for us northerners I see multiples a day of each variety :)

The rarest taco of them all is the one that doesn't cost money or create drama.

The TX Baja, and Pro access cabs are probably the most rare.

like the kid you ran into, I had to look for a while for both of my AC's, a 2011 TRD Sport, which I later sold, then a 2013 SR5 SC, I wanted low mileage 2.5 gen AC over any other possible configuration and it simply couldn't be found. THIS is what ppl are thinking is 'rare', i suspect. First gens were mostly AC. By 2015 you had about a 6-1 DC to AC ratio. But as someone said, its the RC 4x4 that's the real hen's tooth.

also, my brother's is a '13 AC SR5 2.7l 5 spd. He had to look for a little to find one. he wanted a base (no power or paint matching bumpers) 2.7 5spd and couldn't locate one within a reasonable distance so he settled on the SR5 when they gave him $$ off.

No money, all went to truck...
If you EVER think any tacoma is rare, take a trip to Hawaii. Especially Maui and Big Island.

but I would say, single cab 4x2 is the rarest.

TRD Pro access cab is the rarest 2nd gen. They only made 75 of them.

If you want to narrow it even more, there’s only ~25 Access Cab in each color.

Just saw one in town today, had to do a triple take. When I was looking for my taco, I went to the dealer and said I wanted a gen2 access cab, 4x4, and a 2.7, guy laughed and told me "that's a unicorn". I did find one, I wouldn't say they are rare by any means, but harder to find for sure.

I honestly didn't know they made an access cab short bed until I saw the one. It was just the same color as mine, and had to be a 2010+ like mine, which caught my eye.

i guess my sarcasm wasn’t as obvious as I’d hoped. It was a joke, so such truck exists at least from the factory.
