Just a girl who owns a 2001 Toyota Tacoma Base V6 3.4L 5VZ-FE, and needs help with Parts List..

So I got a 2001 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Base 4wd V6 3.4L 5VZ-FE
Roughly ~182,000 mi.
Noticed last weekend that there was a significant coolant/water (?) leak and it now inevitably needs repair. And I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to cars, much less auto repair, but I'm totally willing to learn.

So I got a friend coming out to help repair, this next Sunday.
For:
- new water pump
- new Thermostat?
- new timing belt
- and might as well replace radiator hoses

(Mid-grade. Like not the cheapest, but not most expensive)

most those things come in a kit from aisin which made the OEM components. there is not really a mid range component list. outs either OEM or junk imo. luckily the aisin kit is like 200 for everything you need. add 50 for the correct coolant. hoses you can cheap on if you want.

timing belt is a big job but there are videos that walk you through every step. a couple specialty tools are required as well.

btw i just used his video for the parts list. you don't necessarily have to buy the fancy tools he does. don't have to change cam seals either.

You should replace the 3 belts too,
AC BELT
FAN BELT
ALTERNATOR BELT
Since they have to come off

And make sure when the new Thermostat is replaced the little bleeder hole is at the 6 o’clock position

 

not necessary if installing the kit with new tensioner

 

All good suggestions above. and I was very confused about the tool above when I did my timing belt. Agree that it is only needed if you are going to keep the old tensioner which I don't recommend and a new one should come in a complete kit, like the one from aircabin man on ebay. Another suggestion is to replace the coolant hoses that feed the oil cooler.. I think they are formed and may have different sizes on the ends so I recall getting them from a toyota dealer.

 

Welcome! You should look at, and only replace if necessary, the 3 drive belts. Since they have to come off *if you're doing a timing service*

I sure hope you went with Aisin or OEM as folks recommended above.

 

Make sure you use the correct coolant for the Toyota. It looks like green is in there now which is not good. The fluid should be pink or red. You can go Toyota Red, Pink or Zerex Asian for the antifreeze.

 

Good call. If you have a coolant leak on a first gen its probably the main coolant hose on the bottom of the radiator.
This is the only vehicle I own that I have to regularly check the hose clamp on to make sure it's staying snug.

I’ll be the one to say it but not having everything oem isn’t the end of the world. When I did my timing belt kit I did not use OEM parts and I flush my radiator and back flushed the system and swapped it to the green coolant. I roughly have 40k miles on my kit and fluids and it hasn’t blown up soooooooooo. Have countless kayak fishing trips in the taco with non oem parts.

 

its about a $1000 fix if you take it to a mechanic for a complete timing belt/water pump/drive belt replacement, I would seriously consider taking it in to a mechanic if you've never done this befpre

 

Lots of opinions here..... But just wanted to verify the kit you got shows a new timing belt tensioner, you will not need that belt compressing tool you show a photo in your original post.

 

When doing a timing belt on a keeper vehicle either of unknown maintenance or knowing that little has been done, I replace every wear part that is removed going in and out of the job.

Just because if I didn't, I'd have to go back in again for that part before the next belt change was due.

 

X2, spend the extra money and get Aisin or OEM, ROCKAUTO.COM.

If you don’t you have a good chance one of the parts will fail
