A-TRAC: WHY is it difficult for some people to accept it?

There are a lot of arguments that could be made, but frankly it's pointless to do so. No one's going to prove anything in this particular thread. Even the stuff Lrgrnr and I are gonna get to down the road won't be "proof" of superiority of one system.

There are so many different wheeling situations and some call for different advantages than others. On a tight turn in a muddy, slippery trail A-TRAC may be the better system for it's better steering and control. On a tipsy ledge climb later than same trail, lockers may be better for the decreased bounce and smooth crawl.

This thread is better served by discussing the different aspects of the systems and what people have done and haven't been able to do with these options. I want information, not chest thumping.

 

Im not knocking ATRAC but if you want a truck as an amazing offroader, i think your much further going with a base model and adding arb in the front and rear... youd save quite a bit of money...

My 2010 reg cab was only 18k out the door... believe me if they offered v6 atrac and rear locker on the reg cabs id probably own one...

 

Same. I wanted the locker and therefore HAD to take the middle wheelbase (under the DCSB and AC). I would've preferred all the traction goodies and the sixer in a regular cab and its shorter wheelbase. Alas...

 

Blue that is a stacked ad video for ARB... They obviously don't want you to know how A-TRAC really works... and I have no idea what traction system those Australian Pradas have... When I watched them the first time I saw how differently the non ARB one was driven... apples to oranges. Can we stay on topic please? I didn't ask which is better, just why it is misunderstood or ignored. I would love front locker too, so I could play more switching around... I would then have 10 or many more drive modes. However, nine is more than enough and it doesn't cost me extra!

For the person who said he 'priced the A-TRAC option'... sorry amigo, A-TRAC is part of the OFF ROAD TRD package and STAR SAFETY SYSTEM... it isn't a seperate option by-itself.

 

the Luxury LC has ATRAC. it didnt do that climb as easy as the fully locked LC

 

I think he meant going from his current truck to a new TRD OR with A-TRAC.

What I want to know is why they can't be accepted as different options with different advantages and disadvantages?

A 6.1L Challenger and a Porsche 911 are both hot cars...one will win in a straight line...the other will win in the twisties...different uses...

There may be an exception to your findings... The 4WD Off Road TRDs have the hydraulic brake booster (for the A-TRAC system). This greatly enhances the AUTO LSD in H2 and TRAC (AUTO LSD) in H4...
I can turn on AUTO LSD and have two rooster tails spin out from my back tires, just like posi-traction.

If you experimented with the AUTO LSD on a Sport or Base/ SR-5 Taco, then it will be weaker, then the Off Road 4WD's. They only have a vacuum brake booster.

the tacoma's only weakness/downside is the damn IFS...

other than that, i am not convinced the jeep is a superior offroader.

reliability issues, top heavy, gas guzzlers...


knowing first hand the TRAC system works, and seeing atrac in action, i have nothing bad to say about atrac... Is there anybody that actually says "i dont like it"

 

If you claim that this video is fake then what can say.

They drive different because they are different systems and on video what you see is end result of traction system. pick any video of new 4runner then find video from the same spot of fully locked vehicle and its the same story. I am not disputing that having A-trac as the option is a very good thing, I am only disputing your claim that A-trac is as good as F/R lockers thats all .

Its simple IF A-trac is better or atleast on par than having F/R lockers there must be a video from the same spot, same time of year, same conditions where A-trac and fully locked vehicle is running and A-trac runs better. I am open minded so I would like to see it.
Forgive me but So far I only saw how A-trac does not compare to fully locked truck.

 

I wish I had A-TRAC. I have an 08 TRD Sport, and A-TRAC was not available in the 08 Sport package. A-TRAC is the same in principle as the Mercedes 4-Matic. Of course, the Tacoma is much less expensive to buy.

 

I saw A-trac in action too and was not impressed , that's why I am very skeptical on David K claim that A-Trac is substitute for lockers. I want proof ...
