Matco vs Snap-On rolling box opinions

Planning on purchasing either a Matco 4s or Snap-On Classic series rolling tool box in the not too distant future. I've looked hands on at some of each but can't quite decide. Anyone have opinions one way or another on them? Preferably someone who uses their box everyday. It'll be getting a lot of use/abuse.
I'm just sick of the Snap-On & Matco salesmen that are saying the exact same thing about theirs and their competitor's boxes.

I have a classic 96 with the stainless top. I dont have a matco dealer however I think a box is a box, grind them against each other and get a deal... then buy the cheeper one.
Or open your current box, what brand do you own more of?

 

I own a Snap-on KRL1001 and KRL1201 and I must say there is nothing like snap-on! I thought they were all the same until I did some research and listened to what other mechanics had to say. For starters, get on youtube and watch some of the videos about build quality snap-on vs. the others and you'll start to see there's a huge difference.

 

If you can afford Snappy, pull the trigger. If not, save your money and buy Sears Craftsman.

 

Tools make you money, not boxes. Snap on tools in a box that doesn't cost an arm and a leg is my stand

 

they are both good companies.i have a snap on box that is 35 years old and its still mint.

 

i use snap on tools in a snap on box daily at work (mechanic in the USAF) and i gotta say, snap on tools are top notch quality, but the boxes we have at work are complete POS. just my personal opinion

 

I'm in A&P school so I can get a 50% discount on SO and Matco. In the end, they're both relatively the same price. I like the SO Masters series a lot but can't get a discount on them unfortunately.
The vast majority of my tools and SO and Sioux so I'm leaning towards SO.

 

a toolbox just holds your tools...My $500 craftsman box does just a good as job as a $4,000 box. IMO, and then your not stuck paying it off for a low monthly payment of 25.76 for 3,405 weeks.

 

I tried that route. Didn't work. It only works if you have minimal tools/weight in each drawer. I had the craftsman ball bearing series and it hardly lasted a year. If you're a professional, not a backyard mechanic, don't waste your time on craftsman.

I have a lot of snap-on and mac tools. I also used to use a mac toolbox everyday,everyday in my truck logging hundreds of miles over the road. the mac box was junk in about 3 years. Lista toolboxes to me are the best. we have been using them for years without any issues. each drawer is rated for 440 lbs and when your bouncing on the road all the time that makes all the difference in the world...from what i had heard is that lista used to make the boxes for snap-on

 

Either one of those boxes will serve you well.Get the be$t deal and make sure the dealer "stands" behind it....

My Mac/Matco combination is a "few" years old...Mac top purchased in 1977 and the Matco bottom in 1978 ( yes before most of you were born )......wrenched full time out of them for 10 years and then part time through today....I have NEVER replaced a slider,draw or lock...clean & grease the slides twice a year and they have served me well....

Most of the tools inside are from that "vintage" also and still perform as new ( but are long paid off ) BUT either dealer will repair or replace ANY of them without a $$$ being spent by me.....THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE PAYING FOR....30+ years of quality service ...

Maybe a little late here,but dont waste your money on a 4S matco box.The quality isnt even as good as a craftsman pro.I destroyed one in less than 3 years.Now the matco 6S is as good as it gets.Ive got mine loaded to the gills with tools and the drawers seem to get smoother and smoother.The KRA series snap ons are just like a matco 4S.JUNK.Too lightweight for an everyday box thats actually full.Now the KRL snapons are as good as the best Matcos.Ive had all 4 styles over the last 10 years.I am 6'8" and 375lbs and I can stand in the bottom drawer of my Matco 6S and it wont tip over, or hurt the drawer.

Something else to consider is security. I have a Craftsman box. But I don't have 20K in tools that I use to earn a living either. If I did have 20K in tools stored in a shop away from my house, I would spend the 6K dollars and buy a box that will stand up to a prolonged attack by a thief with a lot of time to try and get in.

I have seen pictures of high end toolboxes that have repelled attempted break ins. Some had a torch used on them. It did not appear the thief knew what he was doing with a torch, but the mechanic still has his tools. A Craftsman box would have been open in a few minutes with a prybar.

 

I had a Snap on Classic 60 by far the best box I had ever owned. I put it (fully loaded with tools)in the back of my truck and drove across the country and some even after 5000 miles and some about 800 off road the drawers still opened as smoothly as the day I bought it. Sadly I had to sell it to pay medical bills but I do not regret spending 4k on a box for that kind of quality and durability.
