That they do, you need gears, your motor and transmission will last alot longer. My 4Runner had 325K miles on it when I sold it. Gears help out in so many different ways. Good luck with your truck.

Thanks. Not too concerned with the transmission. I service it (first flush at 35k miles and drain/fill every 30k miles since) and monitor the transmission temps when I'm towing. I also kept the tire size/weight reasonable (265/75/16 c rated on F5s).

I def wouldn't want to tow a trailer this size with 37s.

I'm definitely asking a lot of the truck. The previous owner asked just as much from it but with stock diameter tires and those big tires I installed didn't affect the truck as near as much as most said it would/think it does (like Mully).

0-60 is 0.6 seconds slower than stock with the Pedal Commander off. 0-60 up a 7.5% grade is close to 10 seconds with the Pedal Commander off. The Pedal Commander makes a fairly big difference.

Gears changes are fine tuning, nothing more. If the vehicle is a dog before a gear change it'll be a dog after as well. Transmissions have more than one gear which helps.

I also towed that 6500 lbs up a short driveway of about 16*-18* from a dead stop half way up the driveway. I needed to know the trucks capabilities. Both rear tires spun a little (PreRunner) and I don't think it would have the traction to go up any steeper of an incline. No way stock tires would have gotten up that driveway.
    20200215_092701.jpg
The only reason I know the approximate degrees of these inclines is because I've been shopping for land so I researched what degree of inclines require what type of material (DG, gravel, blacktop, concrete). I looked at a lot of different land lots and measured most of those hills I looked at. The land I ended up buying has two driveways, one at 13*, and one at 18*.

Another thing is I'm towing boats and not trailers with huge flat sides on them. I'm positive that makes a difference.

What he’s talking about doing with that truck is down right stupid.

He wants to tow full time with a 28 ft. Travel trailer, a wife, multiple kids, all of their shit, water, waste, etc, etc.

His realistic payload is only just over 1k on that truck

Wrong. Wife and kids will be in different vehicle.

You do realize payload and towing capacity are two different things right???

I'm curious what left those reddish skid marks down that driveway & then off the side of it...

If you don’t understand how that travel trailer he’s towing factors into payload then you shouldn’t be commenting in this thread.

I don't believe he's planning on towing full time. From what I read, the travel for work and if it's like the traveling nurses I've spoken with they are in one location for up to 3 months. They will also have a second vehicle that will caravan with them. That vehicle will have wife and kids. Realistically he can pack the truck with just himself and some extra fuel at most with the rest of the stuff in the trailer and second vehicle so payload shouldn't be an issue either since the trailer tongue weight should be sub 700lbs (including the weight of the WD hitch).

I don't know, I just bought a boat from the guy and didn't know him. Weird color for a skid mark, mine are always brown.

I had specialized tow certifications and trained in tractor trailers because our setup pushed 55ft in the military so take my .02c for what its worth.. but its like buttering bread with a spoon. It’ll get the job done, but theres an easier way..

Tow limits were created to be pushed I suppose. I just dont personally do it because it makes our trips a tad white-knuckley when it gets windy or steep. Im actually in the process of trying to sell my Taco in order to move up to a Tundra because i dont want to tow my tractor and camper with it maxed out.
Youre a grown assed child though and can do whatever you want. :)

LMFAO! You're the person that doesn't understand the difference between payload and towing capacity. Hell you didn't even pick up that his wife and kids will be in a different vehicle. I don't know why I put you on ignore months ago as you're hilarious!

Max payloads, max towing and MPG are all calculated under ideal conditions. Factor in hills, wind, rain, snow and any thing else into the equation and those numbers start to change. The OP stated earlier he was going to look for a smaller trailer, smart man took some advise. I bought my canopy from a fellow that totalled his Tacoma when the under max payload trailer caused him to leave the pavement. Hit some dips in the road, lifted the back of his truck and so long Taco.

Get a 3/4 or 1-Ton truck,Tacomas are not made to haul huge 28 ft trailers.

Real answer - towing that much with Tacoma for 2 years will suck and ultimately you will encounter a condition (wind gusts or hills or who knows) in those 2 years which is dangerous. Get more truck or less trailer.

I’ve towed that amount of weight around locally with our dump trailer for work but wouldn’t really want to do cross-country trips.

    back to bone stock.
same, i towed a utility trailer with about 1.5 yards of dryish soil and it felt like a lot. i was glad to dump that load and return the trailer to a friend.

37s and stock gears. WTF, probably can only use OD when going downhill with a tailwind.
