I set my collision avoidance to the highest sensitivity and turned off Lane Assist. I haven’t ever had any type of reaction even when I got close to someone. I read the manual but wondered what causes it to activate either a warning or the brakes in your experience. I don’t want it just want to make sure it works. 2020 SR access cab 2wd. Thanks.

There are certain parameters that need to be met. First is a warning light an sound, then if you do not touch the brakes it will begin to apply them for you. Once you touch the brakes the system backs out and lets you handle it.

Mine's beeped at me before but I didn't know it would actually brake for me

I have had mine brake for me a few times. The condition I have noticed for this to occur are that the vehicle in front is traveling at a much lower speed than you. I have experienced this when a driver suddenly brakes to turn into a business or road. I hear a beep..beep, red BRAKE on the centre instrument panel and sudden automatic braking of the vehicle.

I have also had automatic braking when using the cruise control and a slow moving driver in another lane changes lanes in front of you. No warning just a noticeable braking affect to maintain distance to the slow moving vehicle.

I had one warning when using radar cruise - it beeped and the distance icon popped up in orange color when the guy up front slowed down aggressively to take a turn. I just hovered over the brake and let the adaptive cruise take care of it - never touched the pedal.

If you're an attentive driver, and don't drive like an a-hole, odds are you will never see a warning or brake application. The system engages when it senses you are oblivious to what's ahead, and are doing nothing to react.

Auto braking is a fail safe last resort system for collision avoidance. It isn't something you use regularly because you have it! If it's always coming on for you then maybe it's time to reassess your driving habits or maybe stop driving for the sake of others on the road!

I assume you are talking about the emergency braking, and not the dynamic radar cruise control that speeds up and slows down to maintain a travelling distance. It works, but think of it as emergency collision mitigation. You're not going to see it warn or apply emergency braking unless a collision is imminent, not when you're just tailgating somebody. I have had it apply the brakes exactly once in almost 2 years when there was a stoppage right after a blind curve on a freeway overpass.

Just keep in mind that Toyota, like most other manufacturers, design and market them to reduce the likelihood and severity of collisions - not entirely prevent them.

You need boxes and a camera to truly test it.

Had it kick in once, was on the freeway and somebody cut me off hard and close. It started braking a split second before I started hitting the brakes, in that situation I would have been fine without it but if I had been looking down or distracted by something it would have definitely saved me from a good fender bender.

Not quite - I’ve definitely felt it engage the automatic brakes when i was already on the pedal - seems it didn’t think i was slowing quickly enough

also the BRAKE!! Warning and chime does not go off as soon as you hit the brakes, it continues to scream until it thinks it’s safe

Thanks for all replies. I was just hoping to activate it one time to see how it feels and sounds. I like to test a vehicle’s limits and gadgets in a controlled environment so I know what to expect. At least you can turn off the lane assist, when I need that I’ll probably stop driving.

Why boxes? Wouldn't the side of a building work as well?

My dad tried to test this during a test drive. Car stopped quick and all and quicker than the car behind. Got rear-ended.

The side of a building will work as well as a duffle bag full of puppies. I just suggested the boxes because it seemed more cost effective.

I asked my boss to let me test the pedestrian warning on him. He said NO.

Bosses are THE WORST. They won’t let us throw darts at each other where I work so we had to settle for nerf guns.

The other day I did not have any sort of driver assistance enabled (radar cruise control or lane keep assist). I was on the highway driving around 70 MPH when the driver suddenly slammed on her brakes in front of me (the car in front of her had the bumper come off). My truck displayed the "Brake!" warning on the dash and it automatically slammed on the brakes with ABS kicking in until I also started braking the truck.

Yea, he asked at the end of last year what we needed for the shop, because we still had money in the budget. Apparently a 3D archery target and a compound bow is not a justifiable shop tool.
He also denied a stripper pole and a waitress from Margaritaville.
