    Here's my official recommendation:

    Cheap HAM radio. It is legal to listen anytime and transmit without a license in a life threatening situation.

    Not cheap handheld CB. Has external antenna that you can mount when needed and receives weather stations:

    I’m a little more Gucci and will likely get the $100 Cobra with roof antenna (hopefully provides added range/clarity) and also comes with a 12v cigarette charging cord to save on batteries.

    For the price, you can't beat that Baofeng HAM radio.

    Seems like the GA crew prefer CB, but the TX crew all prefer HAM. Some have both, some have neither. I've heard, though the time period for this happening has already passed, that you won't be able to buy a HAM radio without providing your license number. For ~$20, i went ahead and picked up the handheld HAM so that I can have both. That way it doesn't matter who I'm wheeling with....I won't be left in the dark. I've been that guy twice and it sucks.

    You got it brother... I was part of the group that went to Charlie’s creek a few weeks ago for the snow ride and I was “that guy”. (Granted it was my first time wheeling and I came bare-bones prepared.) Radio’s been at the top of my list since...

    Yea idk. Im super swamped this week with stuff to do to prepare for trip. Pick up truck after work tomorrow. Body mounts on Wednesday. Get spare tire mounted on Thursday and get Tent mounted back up. Friday leaving. I dont have time to install one before the trip.
