Tell that to your insurance company if you get into an accident. GVWR means something to them.

Everyone on here is prone to hysterics and I'd guess more than a few of them have zero real experience, bottom line is it's 4500lbs with a distribution hitch and bags, on a truck rated for 6500 max. You'll be absolutely fine but your MPG will blow. Drive safe and enjoy your trip friend.

You will destroy or die trying with a Tacoma and that much weight. I have done it multiple times with my small trailer.

Bags are for payload and do nothing to get the load off the rear axle. The proper solution for towing is a weight distribution hitch. No need to waste money on airbags.

Guess a guy can haul a 40 ft trailer with a Tacoma if he wants too bad enough.

I did around 6900lbs in an 2007 AC Auto and tow package from Toronto to PEI no issues. Lots of hills and a couple of mountains, in 4th the whole time. But I do have the HD OME rear pack with extra leaf, Timbren bumps and the stiffer OME shocks. I would say I would not have done it with anything less, control was amazing through some really rough heavily rutted highways... but yes IMO you need more suspension ... Hawk pads with good rotors is almost a must too

Tacoma is not built to haul that much weight. Buy a real truck and not a toy. Your motor will prematurely fail one day. Tacoma is a stupid little toy truck anyways.

Clearly it should have blown up and killed a church full of puppies and orphans according to a good portion of the folks in here. Consider following the esteemed advice and making sure you pull no more than 400lbs. :p

I pull at the exact limit (and occasionally over) of my Land cruiser across 5 states three times a year. No problems, it's never the engines that have problems on heavy loads, it's just supporting the load. Leafs, mounts, brakes, and the trans (though a cooler is an easy fix for that). Do your due diligence and make sure your brakes and load distribution deals are setup right and everything works out great. Never had a problem lugging a 6k trailer through 110° AZ, but I am prepared... The moral of the story, prepare

These trucks are a love hate relationship. I love to use it, but hate to use it. 2 years ago, traveled through 7 different states fully loaded. This was before the new lift and the 2nd pic is after the SOA on the trailer. Little truck never failed me. I figure if something breaks, I am sure I will fix it. Going to stay with my setup because it works for me. You tow whatever you want, just drive safe and good luck with your truck.

Yah I'm MT so trans temps are no worries. My diffs are running some heavy ass 85w140 per ECGS. MPG's suffer but the truck doesn't give a fuck.

I towed a 22 foot travel trailer from Roanoke, VA, to Veneta, OR, with my 2011 DCLB a few years back. The trailer was lighter than yours by a few hundred pounds but I had a bunch of tools and heavy stuff in the truck too. It was in the winter so we took the southern route. Something around 3200 miles. I towed the same trailer several times with a 2015 F150 with the 2.7 Ecoboost. The Tacoma struggled constantly. I nearly shit myself numerous times because of the effects of wind, and braking distance, even with a weight distribution hitch, brake controller, and Hawk pads and rotors. Those wind gust warnings you disregard without a load almost make you drop a load with that big sail back there. The F150 made it so easy I honestly would forget it was back there. It'd do 85 on the interstate and braked like there was nothing back there. All the numbers and arguing and hyperbole aside, from someone who has towed a big thing for considerable distances with a Tacoma, then towed the same thing with a better-designed truck for it so I have real world comparison, don't do it. As someone said earlier, get more truck or less trailer. What I tell everyone is, just because the Tacoma COULD do it, doesn't mean I should have done it. I would not do it again.
