If this is your first project I wouldn't make it wall mounted. For the base, I would use whatever is cheapest... like pine (or plywood cabinet with hardwood frame). For the top, since this is your first project, I would used nicer plywood like 3/4" Birch or Maple and edge the side with a 1x2 hardwood of your choosing...

This is a bad photograph...because it's nighttime, but this is maple ply with a cherry edge (for a shelf in a closet... don't look too closely).

 

I managed to get 2 pieces of black walnut finished last night. Added a coat of danish oil, with maybe 2 more to go and then I'll polish them up with wood wax.

 

I was standing in our kitchen last night drinking water and took a couple pictures of this board above our sink. Drew it up on the computer and cut it on the milling machine at work when we redid our kitchen. It's hickory. Don't tell anybody but it's off center 1" to the left.

 

I didn't want to say anything, but yiiiikes. Looks pretty bad dude, just burn the whole house down.

definitely loving the Domino now that I've used it a bit more

completed the Bangkarai deck handrail today and using the dominoes not only reinforced the joints but made registering them a breeze

 

Dammit....can't wait to see the look on my old lady's face.

Back when we redid our kitchen my wife wanted a few slide out things for spices. We installed hickory cabinets and I couldn’t find hickory fronts for the slide outs anywhere. We went and bought some hickory boards and I made a bit to match the outside and used the milling machine at work to cut the edge on the boards so they would match the doors and drawers.

For some of the exotics or other one-off specialty pieces I look to the webs. When I need to buy in bulk for a larger project I'll go to a local guy. There's also a local (1.5 hour drive) dealer that apparently sells online and will ship orders over something like $200. That place is insane! Must be millions sitting in his inventory. Some of my friends have been suggesting I make something live edge. Decided to throw A little epoxy in the mix too. Typically I'm super critical of all my projects, but I'm satisfied with how it turned out.

Hi there woodworkers,

I don’t know squat about sealing wood so need your help.

I made this foot rest for my daughters high chair. If you know about the cult culture around the IKEA Antilop high chair you know. If not, my wife could tell you all about it!

My question is sealing it. What should I do to seal it so it fills in the gaps between the pieces of the wood and makes it smooth and easily wipe able? Also will hold up against baby feet

Made up of cherry, walnut, poplar, basswood, and baltic birch plywood.

Also following the simple method, don’t have a lot of tools and just need to do this one thing so don’t need a lot of product.

I can't see the pics . But if there's actual gaps to fill that you want filled, you might need some tools. Or some sand paper and some elbow grease.
