2.7L works fine in my Tacoma, cast iron block, built and proven to last, wanted something reliable so it absolutely belongs in mine ;)

I would take you up on that offer, especially after the googling I just did, but I have a 3.5 and a 2.7 3rd gens sitting my drive way right now. I'll just test this myself

    Oh, and I'm at 100k

Your sarcasm wasn't lost. I was just expressing my feelings on the comment of 'truck engine' by using your sarcasm as a soap box. Sorry.

All of the sudden, never had a light on the dash come on since I’ve owned the truck. Taken it to the same dealer every 5k, the same dealer it’s at now and they were just as surprised as me. No towing history with the truck, and I really do only go 70 with it in S6 down to SD. I like to see how long I can stay in the 23mpg range

    My 10 cents .... JMO.

Over Temp light should have been on given some warning , but if it did not it it may have been a sudden and large leak. From what you said you did nothing wrong. From years ago when we had more overheated engines we used to make sure that when we added coolant to a hot engine the engine was running to help the water "Mix" and not let the new colder water shock the block and crack it. Not sure if that applies now and especially with the aluminum blocks.

All in all your description, if accurate, tells me that you did nothing wrong to violate the warranty. You discovered the Overheat, pulled over, let it cool down then refilled. To me the user manual does not say anything differently. IF service and checks were timely and you can prove... I feel the dealer has to PROVE you did something and WHAT you did that was in VIOLATION of the warranty - IN WRITING!.

Now the wait. Feel sorry for your issue! But any correctly serviced engine at 50K should not of unexpectedly and suddenly lose massive coolant and crack the block - even at highway speeds. Perhaps if Toyota had a decent low coolant alarms and auto shutdown at temp /limp mode for this issue ... it would have kicked in and prevent this to some point ....

Hang in there ... be nice but firm. And if they deny the claim make surer they have it in writing and specifics that PROVE you caused the issue... Then it's PAy or lawyer time ... Good Luck OP !! Keep us informed.

More committed than any 3.5 guy reading this considering I have the more reliable motor no question.

5.7 is a tank too! I don’t know if I’d bet against it. It’ll smash a 3.5 longevity too from what I’ve seen depending on year.

    who drives what?

Hopefully (if she drives the 2.7), she either knows how to maintain it or you do it for her if you expect an accurate comparison.

If not, and if she’s anything like my ex getting oil changes every 25k miles (if she even remembered), while you maintain your 3.5 correctly - then it’s not really a strong comparison lol.

But if all maintenance is the same between the two, I say without a doubt 2.7.

When's the regional tech teardown?

Sounds like a genuine block failure. Was there coolant in the oil?

They will probably not give you a full new engine but a short block. Of which I hope they also give you that 8 year 125k powertrain warranty. :frusty:

Tear down occurred last week after they got approval to do so. Required a regional tech to come out and pre-inspect.

No idea about the coolant/oil mixture, I haven’t heard specifics. The service employee that took me in has been out sick all week, so I only hear updates when I call in and they’re from different employees that have to ask the techs questions before answering mine. Makes the info exchange take way longer.

The last update I got yesterday was that there was a blown HG, and a crack in the rear passenger cylinder. They’ve emailed corporate requesting it be covered under warranty, just waiting on the big boys upstairs to approve it.

The main reason I started this thread was to see if anyone had any similar experience on an unmodified 3rd gen, and what the course of action was afterwards. Didn’t think I’d get all the side chatter, but that’s TW I guess. I’m curious what kind of warranty will be attached with whatever repairs they end up making, and I’ll be damn sure to read all the fine print on what gets done and what comes with it

You got me thinking that if my truck over heats just shut it off and tow it in to try and protect myself from them , good luck and I hope they cover it for you .

Dude, GTFO with that shit. The 3.5 has been around in nearly the same form since ~2006, it's a rock solid motor.

Now, back on topic - OP please keep us posted with the end result. This should 100% be covered under warranty, and per the Moss Magnusson Warranty Act, they would have to prove that any modifications were the root cause of the failure in order to deny it.

There is a common problem in the tacoma 3.5 where the plastic welds are defective and you leak coolant (do a search). I bet that's what happened to the op
