Fun little morning job on a Dana 60. Squirted up the truss and started setting up steering for a Jeep wj... gonna be interesting to see how everything clears each other with the limited space

did you have fun? I remember my first arc, I bought the cheapie 90A stick welder from Princess Auto ( CDN Harbour Freight ) My brother in law was behind me covering his eyes while I continued to get the rod stuck to the metal, he was in charge of flipping the breaker each time

but that fist inch or so when I finally did get it. that was pure voo doo in my mind. all that molten blazing hot metal just oozing around, so cool!

instead of trying to stick two pieces together, just try laying beads on a flat sheet, get used to the sounds, the feel, striking the arc, your speed. it really helped me. Plus you can well a lot more without needing more metal. Heck, you can start to stack your welds if you run out of steel.

if any of the more experienced members give you different advice, I'd take theirs, LOL. I'm just a weekend home gamer who likes to fart around in the garage and watches way too much youtube welding videos.

 

Sometimes I think my son tears stuff up just to see if I can fix it.

 

speaking of welding....

finally *almost* finished off the sliders, did a mock up and bolted them to my truck. They look soo good! I can't wait to finally get them up there.

here's a shot of them on my friends truck since he's making a set himself and wanted to see how they'll look on a DCSB, VS my AC.

 

Thanks. Yes it was fun. I always like learning new stuff, and I'm already thinking up projects. Well, to be accurate I have a couple projects in mind that'd cost me more to hire someone to do than it cost me to buy the equipment, which is what started me down this road. For the same money I end up getting the projects done and end up with a welder and some knowledge.

Appreciate the suggestion on just laying beads on flat metal. I'll do some of that as well. Be a good way to also practice on different thickness materials.

 

Hope this works for the guy who brought it got to love the cardboard drawings with a bunch of dimensions you don’t need.

 

What if he *really* wanted those corrugated ripples on the edges?

You guys have any tips for welding true flux core on metal the thickness of our tacos frame... any time i weld fc on thin metal its pretty yucky

Just think if you couldn`t weld you would have a even bigger scrap pile

I still don`t like Self Shielded Wire Even though is must have improved in 30 years .

All Wire is not created Equal .

i got my sliders in and am debating if i should weld them on or weld sleeves that go through the frame to not have it crush when i tighten the bolts down

 

Out of Position welding on these Trucks is some of the most difficult work there is.

Any time your welding with your arms above your shoulders unless you do it on a constant basis your welding will suffer .

.030 will give you better control out of position then it comes to experience

 

What truck are you putting them on? It sounds like you’re talking about a boxed frame, which is only first gens I think. Definitely not second or third gens.

Ah tracking. I would just weld them on personally. I have a couple friends with 3rd gen runners and they have theirs welded on as well

 

It doesnt just bend the one side of the frame?

Im the guy who managed to bend the bead on my tire... im hard on my stuff

Probably just gonna weld them on... its like 70 for the nuts and bolts alone
