A short while ago, I bought a rebuilt steering rack for my '03 and had a dealer install it. That was an adventure in itself.

A few days ago, I start the truck and I hear the whine of a power steering pump that needs fluid. I pick up some that matches the requirements in the owners manual and top off this reservoir. Since then, it is needing power steering fluid daily.

I crawled under the truck and it appears that the passenger side rubber bellows on the steering rack has fluid dripping from it. Is this a repair that can be made to this steering rack or do I need a new steering rack?

    Any advice really appreciated.

Found a local mechanic that was highly favored and finally got the time to take it in. He said that both main outer seals had failed in the rebuilt rank and pinion mechanism. He suggested replacing the unit.

Cost for first time parts + labor = $450
Cost for second time parts + labor = $700

Buying a rebuilt starter or alternator is no big deal but a rebuilt pressure plate (many years ago) and now a rebuilt rack and pinion have cost me dearly.

    Something to think about.

iirc, my dealer wanted almost a grand for a new rack. ..but it also came with a lifetime warranty.

I just purchased a rebuilt power steering pump for my 95 taco and put it in. I bleed the system and topped off the fluid and it is whining. does anyone know what the problem with this might be?

I brought my truck into the dealership to have the power steering fluid flushed and they couldn't do it because there was fluid leaking into the right boot...Quote for a steering rack and labour $664.00 + tax...Power steering flush $89.95 and a wheel alignment recomended...

I just changed my Power Steering pump, I got it from Kragen and the pump started making all kind of noises, I paid for it $116 + tax. I took it back and got one from the dealer for $350. no problems with this one. I am lucky I did it my self and didn't pay for labor.

I am not buying any parts like this from the autoparts store any more.

Could there still be air in the pump body? Maybe a re-bleed needed?

    Anyone?
