winters rims from dealer

I recently looked into getting winter (steel) rims for my Taco. I priced several local shops/tire outlets and even went looking for used ones. To make long story short I ended up getting them from the dealer (new). Not because I couldn't find them elsewhere. Most places I contacted had them with the exception of a few. Suprisingly Walmart doesn't carry them nor would they even try from their distrubutor, who does have them...go figure!

Anyways, everyone else quoted me $30 + per wheel above the dealership! A similar thing happened when I purchased winter rims and tires for my old Dodge...the dealeship was the lowest price then too.

One local wrecker also wanted more than what I could get them new, only $5 more per wheel but still more than new! Funny even he didn't believe me when I told him what was Toyota's regular price!

I've always avoided dealers due to their higher prices. I guess that still is the case for most maintenace and specialty items but for regular items,they are competitive...and is this case clearly so!

 

What kind of steel wheels did you get? Stock Tacoma wheels? I've seen a ton on E-bay for decent prices. I'm using my stock steel wheels for my winter tires and as soon as income taxes come back, I'm going to buy myself a good set of aluminum or alloy wheels to put back on for the summer.

 

Seems buying aftermarket steelies is getting more difficult. Tirerack.com always carried them until this year (I got mine for $30 ea in 05'). Think steel prices and adapting TPMS monitors have made them more expensive.

Other than dealer, others can usually find a set of of any 16x7 2004+ Toyota truck/suv rims for sale locally, ebay, maybe forums (6 lug, probably fewer 15 x 6.5 5 lug)

why change wheels for the winter?

 

Ever hear of a small country called Canada and all the snow it gets in the winter??? EH!

 

no im mentally challenged and was raised by possums. My question is why should it matter what rims you ride on in the snow?

 

Two reasons: 1 you keep your tires mounted for easy change over.
2 you protect your alloys from damage during winter driving.

 

So did you get TPMS with the new wheels? If yes, what was the total cost per wheel? I've given up getting winter wheels b/c of the cost of OEM TPMS. Apparently non-OEM TPMS won't work with the truck's system, unfortunately.
