Portland Area Gear Installation

Looking for an affordable shop to install 4.88 gears front and rear along with a lunchbox in the rear on my 2001 Tacoma. Any recommendations welcome. Feel free to let me know what you paid if you’ve had similar work done at the shop you mention.

Gave them a ring today, they don't do gears, but thanks regardless. Called Jim Estes' Garage in Oregon City. I'll throw up the quote once I get it for anyone else who has the same question.

 

You could try Wanderlust Overland in OC as well or Holbrook Specialties in Gladstone.

 

Holbrook came back at $3,500 - Six States at $2690.50. So I guess I need to save some more pennies. That's with 4.88 F + R seals bearings and an Auburn Pro Posi.

Just in case anyone is pondering the same work.

 

I will be regearing in the future as well. Six States is the name of the shop that quoted $2690.50?

 

That’s correct, they are on Columbia Blvd in N Portland. Their name comes up pretty often it seems.

I just had 4.88 gears installed, front/rear no e-locker at Paden Drivetrain on Killingsworth.
$1685 for parts AND labor. Got it done in one day. Still in break in period but everything feels a lot better since putting on bigger tires and I'm starting to see an improvement in fuel economy. Highly recommended on price alone.

A Nitro kit is $1300 alone.

 

Nitro gears. Really blows my mind how little he charged for labor. I was recommend to Paden by Trendsetters who I’d gotten a body chop from a couple months ago (also highly recommended). I mentioned to my coworker about the drivetrain work I was getting done and he told me he’d been going to Paden’s for years. At that price it’s a no-brainer!

Dude that’s awesome! Basically free labor. I wonder if it was because you’re low mileage? I remember someone saying that under XXXX number of miles you use a different kit.

 

I just got the same quote stopping in at their shop today. Really moves up my gear timeline. Try to keep this in the down low for now So they don’t raise it up lol

 

My same thinking. I wrote their name and number down. Someone should shut this thread down and delete it asap Did you get a quote for 4.88 or 5.29? After I stop being lazy and get all my mods on that are sitting in the garage I don't think 4.88 is gonna cut it for me.

 

So I talked to TAV (tactical applications vehicles) about gear ratios and they build some heavy ass rigs check em out on YouTube. They’re still putting 4.88’s on for 33/35 and a ton of weight. It’s better for Highway overall I think not quite so aggressive

 

I follow TAV and always wondered why they were using 4.88s in some of their KAYA builds. Seemed really heavy for the ratio they're using just based off what people on the forums say. I'll probably be ready for a re-gear at the end of the year so I guess I've got some time to decide. This is of course assuming Paden Drivetrain doesn't jack up their prices!
