Camping in a Softopper or Bestop?

Has anyone ever used a magnetic strip or something along those lines to close the rear flap instead of the velcro. Picking up a used softopper tonight and want to see if I can avoid taping something to my tailgate.

 

Sealed up some corners. Seam sealer and water proof spray. Been in some good rain and drier than a tent

 

You don’t need to tape anything to your tailgate? Unless I’m not understanding you properly

 

I don't even know what to call it but who makes that tailgate screen thing?

Definitely loving these responses so far.. I've got a bestop myself that I'm using while I search for the perfect hard top for my truck. Built a lightweight and cheap sleeping platform with some convenient features for an upcoming roadtrip. Total cost <$100 and weighs around 100lb. I really like the modular design that can sleep 1-2 people as well as the security features I added in - it's not theftproof, but it is much harder to steal than just slash-and-grab.

Next thing to do is to either stain/finish the storage access door or to carpet it..

 

what kind of lights are you using>

 

There is a piece of velcro that is supposed to be taped to the tailgate that the rear flap secures too.

 

They're a generic USB powered LED fairy lights from Amazon. I got those because it has the lowest power draw so it lasts the longest when powered using a mini battery bank that I got for free somewhere.

Right on, I say go for it. FWIW, I've got a couple of LED strips (1 ft long each) mounted on either side of my bed that run off of AAA batteries. You can see it on the right side of my bed in the third picture. Totally bright enough for my daily needs, but I can see myself upgrading to those led strips that run the length of the bed in the future - those look great.

 

How are those insulation pads?? Do you feel like you get any dust in the bed with those two holes? OR do you plug them up?

 

Insulation pad is a mattress topper (3 inches I think) and it's firm yet comfy. How warm it keeps me is to be tested as I used to just use a sleeping pad. And which two holes were you referring to?

 

ops i mean the side panels! I never thought about putting insulation panels on the side I'm sorry for the confusion.

 

Ah, yeah those are there to black out the sides of my bestop since it comes with windows. They're noticeably cooler than the canvas on a hot day so I assume they work well to insulate against whatever the ambient temperature is outside. Though I doubt two panels will do much to insulate the camper shell; you'd have to insulate most of the surface area in there... I did see a picture of someone who did that to their softopper, I just forgot where. I'll look around and let you know if I find the guy
