Yep I fall into that “dumbass that doesn’t know what he’s doing” category.

 

I was talking about the supposed pros in the industry

 

I dont like roofs, I avoid them at all costs luckily most of what I do involves the walls, not the roofs, so I am on swing stage scaffolds or manlifts most of the time. Flat roofs, no problem anything over a 2/12, and I avoid like the plague. I dont like ladders either, the older you get, the more important self preservation becomes. I see far too many accidents throughout the industry with ladders and falls.

I’m no construction guy.. but what I guarantee you I do 100% of the time is over engineer the shit out of everything

I fought like hell to ease the wobbles in that thing. Finally after that lower X brace it stiffened up.

 

Gotcha. Lap joints and then sandwiching the posts with the angle braces mortiessed into the posts gets it gone from the get go. Also instead of the lags being vertical have them angled. I don't use carriage bolts or nails anymore timberloks and structural screws are so much nicer, time saving, better IMO comes at the cost of expense though. Squares rack triangles don't, an old framer taught me to view everything like that. Hurricane ties work good and on the floor joists blocking of sorts to prevent them from twisting.

 

Yea so the only problem I’ve had with doing some of the more “professional” joints is a lack of tools for the job and more so a lack of skill to mcgyver with the tools I do have. I’m slowly buying tools as the job requires and I have the money. Doing it the same way I built my automotive tool collection.

 

Those joints I just mentioned a circular saw, drill, drill bits and a nice sharp chisel is all you need. It just takes a little forethought and planning. No real skill either. I bet if I showed you, you'd get it really fast and be like well damn that's easy.

Shoulda told me. I used to rock climb so I’ve got all the gear. I might be too fat for my harness since I’m a solid 40lbs heavier from my guiding days
