How do you know when a pilot enters the room?

Guys with ranger tabs (that have never served in a ranger bat) and one jump chumps are the same way.

With us it’s almost like people think it’s bigger bragging rights to get the qualification but not use it. Dudes actually in those units aren’t usually as bad.

That was my point. It’s the ones that have ONLY been to the school.

Another one- the only guy I’ve seen consistently brag about being SF was an ENG PSG that was kicked out of group. One of the biggest tools I’ve ever met. This dude was the 0.1%

Also to be clear for others reading- isolated example. 99.9% of group guys are humble and cool as shit.

Driving a euro sedan, he’s probably doing fine. But that plate has to trigger gangs of people.

Kids ask me about what to do for enlistments and I usually direct them to the Air Force because they mostly send their officers to fight while the enlisted salute and then go to the exchange to have Burger King or Taco Bell.

That used to be the case. There are more enlisted combat support positions now that put folks in range where those jobs were primarily Army.

Combat weather expanded, as did TACP.

I miss combat comm and command and control work, but I don't miss being shot toward. Cyber was certainly quieter and better air conditioned.

Yeah but “combat” is relative. I mean green beans coffee and Bugerking is on most FOBs and especially super FOBs. Love to hear fobbits (especially places like BIAP) complain about mortars. Bitch they can rarely even reach you, ever had mortars follow your patrol? How about being the only patrol allowed out when the city is deemed to fucked up or roads are black, just because there “might” be a patrol coming thorough the sector.

Please tell me more about how they messed up your combat latte.

    :rofl::rofl::rofl:

We had snipers and the occasional wandering mortar in Bosnia. They knew better than to try to mess with us back in the compounds but they would fuck with us driving around the area. There were some fucktards holed up in the top of a factory that kept popping off at UN convoys, and it finally took an AC-130H (with its 105) to convince them that the white trucks were not there for target practice.

Ironically, it was Germans who called in that particular strike. Pay attention to APCs with a shitload of antennas, boys and girls.

They shot at our humvees but left me and my Toyota Hiace alone.

lol ok, I’ll give you Bosnia... missed that one by a couple months with my first duty station. From what I heard it was pretty even ground for everyone. The shot towards did make me chuckle out loud though. :D

    Now Iraq- different story lol

Ultimately, it comes down to that we want better for our children than ourselves. My dad is also USAF retired, I grew up in it, and knew (mostly) what life would be like.

His instructions to me when I enlisted in 1989 were:
    - Don't go in "open general" - have a guaranteed career field (exact words were "no goddamned son of mine is going to be an AGE troop or Security Forces")
    - Don't marry a girl you meet in tech school
    - You can earn any medal you deserve except the Purple Heart - that would upset your mother.

This coming from the guy who flew 117 combat missions in Vietnam as an in-flight avionics technician. "Comm guys never go into harms way" he said...after spending 9 years as in-flight maintenance on "slow moving targets."

His orders to me every time I deployed included "socks - you never have enough socks" and "carry a double load if you can - you never want to have less ammo than anyone shooting toward you." He was the one who taught me the difference between "toward" and "at." He'd say of his EC-47 days "assholes far away with rifles were shooting toward us, and we didn't really pay them any mind because it's impossible to hit a moving aircraft at 6000 feet with a 40 year old rifle. SAMs and ZSUs, on the other hand, were shooting at us, and were to be respected and avoided at all costs."

He was pissed when I caught orders to Sarajevo - like I had anything to do with it. Turned out that they had a qualified availability pool of one at the time. I had all the quals and shots - my ass was going.

Ultimately, it's apparently my fault for reenlisting, according to my Mom.
