Yes, you can put the body on a CJ5 frame. It's really a Jeep then.

Got 50+K miles out of one before it broke and when it broke it destroyed the rear end. Toyota locker will last longer as long as it's not abused.

    Like, so many.
For general trail riding, is one better than the other?

IMO the Toyota is a full locker and a better product.

Tiiiiiiiight. I had a WJ that was just on a 3" IRO setup, but it got totalled by a teenager during rush hour before I could ever do anything cooler. I'm jealous.

Agreed. I had an Aussie locker that took the rear end of my OBS Ford way back when. And considering other people's complaints about being able to overcome their torque limits and still spin, I haven't ever wanted to explore lunchboxes again.

Just gonna post this to the mix as I
The ZJs are plentiful. Surprisingly their weight is close to the XJ's also so you never know. For towing Im trying to keep the base vehicle <4000 lbs. I didnt know they had solid fronts? With dana 30s?

Been building rigs for about 50 years now. I remember being about 4 or 5 and my dad lifting me into the engine compartment so I could watch.

You should see the fuel blown boats we have built. I have built many more different kinds of toys.

Check this out. 350 SB running 125 shot of Nitrous, it shit it's guts out in a ball of fire at Pismo Dunes. There is a video of it somewhere. It would do drag car smokey burnouts.

Correct. WJs too. Jeep didn't move over to IFS until the WK.

    I'd drive that.... I guess:rofl:

Is that the regular box that matches the cab ? Looks amazing either way. Just curious and more to your point of being a kid and getting shown car stuff- that's awesome because it seems not too many people now a days show their kids anything "dangerous" or fear being judged IMO.
But I say screw it, cuz i remember that same thing and been showing my daughter stuff like that since she was old enough to listen to instruction on what not to touch lol. Plan on doing the same with my son when hes old enough you also.
And being in the front seat at that age and seeing all the buttons for short rides! And being told dont touch that!

Forgot to put the legendary Suzuki samurai on your list. The only thing I’d rather take on the trail.

Yes, this is a 72 Stepside.
100% agreed. By our dad showing all of this stuff growing up, we learned how to have a blast without killing ourselves.

Awww man I see your up in Alberta! I know absolutely nothing about taking vehicles over the border but I drove up to Montana from Utah to buy that thing. Super clean with low miles for 4000$ Might be worth a trip south of the border.

Honestly, with very few exceptions, anything with a ladder frame, solid axles, and true low range gearing will be comparable on the trail. In all my years of experience, the breaking point (pun intended) doesn't come when you start breaking axles or other parts, but when the body starts to limit the trails you run. We've had our two door JK for over ten years now; started life as a Rubicon that could be driven to trails, then progressed to a point where, while still completely streetable, we 'wheel it too hard to risk not having a trailer. And we're still basically stock, TBH. That said, this Jeep will never progress much beyond where it's at now, because the cost/benefit analysis doesn't work out. I'd rather keep it as is and buy someone's turn-key buggy in order to 'wheel harder than we do now.

If I'm towing it to the trailhead, 100% it's going to be a side by side.

I'm avoiding adding US to my search lol. Trying to keep $$ in my pocket

Those are some great shots.

Trailering it to and from is the only way to go for me now. For one if my rig breaks down and I'm the only vehicle I always have a tow /recovery possibility. That's probably the biggest advantage for me.
I also will love being able to just dump the thing after the weekend and not have to worry about being ready for monday morning commute

    I cant. Just cant :puke:

Quading and 4x4ing are completely different IMO. But each to their own

Further - I cant believe how frickin expensive these things are ??? For 10 or 15 000 I could build a monster trail pig

Not to mention side by side drivers are some of the biggest a-holes on any given trail, driving around blind corners and shit like they're the only ones around. Have been in many a near accident while crawling slow around a blind corner only to nearly be hit head on or side swiped by one of those idiots. And then they act like you're the one at fault.

Sorry but I've never had a good experience with them if you can't tell lol
