Painting Rims...how many coats

Aight, murdering out the rims (three coats of primer) and getting ready for rustoleum. How many coats should I go or rather what is adequate (3 coats or more?). Using the flat black...

 

I did about three coats of flat black when I painted my rims. It just depends on your painting method and how thick each coat is. you still might need to touch up some spots that aren't dark enough. I know some guys did two coats while others it might take 5...

Also, a lot of people say to do super light coats to prevent drips and runs. I tried that and it was too light so the paint didn't adhere correctly. I had to do (what I thought) was super heavy coats (on the verge of causing runs) for it to work right. I all just depends...

 

Just put on first coat, which I thought was heavy, but after it dried, it was pretty light. Next coat I'll go a little thicker. Thanks for the info!

 

no problem... what color was your primer? mine was gray so it was easy to tell where I needed more paint. I guess it would be harder to tell if you got the black primer. Post pics when you're all done!

 

Primer color was a grayish/green. Did three coats of self-etching primer and just finished up the fourth coat of flat black. Looks good. What does not look good is the "white trash" getup going on in my driveway (front end on jack stands)! I will finish up the rear wheels tomorrow, get it cleaned up, and finally post some pics. (Paint fumes from the basement are starting to fog the typing skills. Hopefully no misspellings)
