Is a K&N oil filter overkill for a 1st gen Taco? also crush washer, belts issues

I usually get the Purolator ones for my wife's car when I do her oil changes, because they get sold on sale if you buy them with the oil. Never had a problem with them and they're usually pretty inexpensive. I use their air filters in my truck too.

Friends tell friends just to say NO to K&N, air and OIL filters. :D I read somewhere that the OEM filters were the best bang for the buck. I buy mine off of Amazon.

I had a K&N on my Jeep and there was always a fine coating of dust on the intake. Also, it was an all day project PITA to clean properly. Nope, just buy the OEM's and spend your time doing something fun. (unless you consider washing and oiling a filter that doesn't work very well fun. In which case carry on.)

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

OEM and others don't have the nut thingy on the top... for making it easier to get the filter off, in that fucked up spot... it makes it so I don't start throwing shit around my garage when I can't get the filter off. :D

I'm one of those people that dropped an oiled K&N in my '99 Prerunner years ago and got a lean code from a gummed up MAF sensor a month or so later, which is why I don't like the idea of their air filters. Obviously this doesn't happen to everyone otherwise how would they still be in business...but I wouldn't want to run one again.

I also ran one of those AFE Pro Dry (non oiled air filters) in my current Tacoma for awhile and had the same experience you had with your K&N...lots of fine dirt getting through it.

I just buy regular paper filters now, change them out once in awhile. They work great and they don't cost an arm and a leg so I don't see why not

Sometimes it helps to use one of those rubber towel things that you use to open jars in the kitchen though lol

I noticed it bad after doing the Mojave trip a couple years ago, I dunno it may have just been the sheer level of dust (was behind several other trucks in the desert for hours on end....lots of dust) or maybe the super fine quality of it out there in the CA desert, I dunno

For the price its worth just running the OEM oil filter that the truck was designed around, From a dealer they are around $7 in person, but if you look around at dealers online I've found them as low as $3.75 so I order a few at a time. As for belts, you can do OEM or get the Denso version. Which are about the same but be warned that I believe the alternator belt is listed as a wrong part number at most places and the belt will end up being too short.

Ya... just so we're clear here... It's not a matter of strength on the oil filter. It's a matter of not being able to get my hand and forearm in there to be able to get the damn thing to turn. Seems like I need a second elbow about the mid point of my forearm to get to the oil filter.

for sure, I can barely get my arm through there as well (via the wheel well...I have no idea how some people do it from directly underneath)

The truck wasn't designed around the oil filter. The oil filter was made to the least expensive design specification that would (kind of) fit in the spot where it goes.

Really not that big of a deal to drop the pans before oil changes and allows visual inspection of Yodas genitals.

No need to spend $15 on a filter when the $5 ones do just as good of a job over the recommended change intervals.

Been running Fram on all my vehicles since I was 16. I wouldn't say I'm a fram fanboi, but that's what I've run, it's more of a force of habit than anything, and I see no reason to change.

One advantage to the Frams is the grippy stuff they put on the end which makes taking it off SOOOO much easier. If you're having to use a wrench to get your filter off, you put it on too damn tight. Only time I've had to mess with a filter wrench is when some Hulk puts the filter on - even had to resort to stabbing a screwdriver in it (not my my Taco) because I couldn't get a filter wrench on it securely enough). Hand tight is all you need.
