    See my build page!
So I replaced my speakers this weekend...I knew the sound out of the stock speakers was poor and the quality of stock speakers are generally not that great, but I was absolutely shocked when I took out the stock speakers. I was prepared for paper cones, but the things couldn't have weighed more than a pound! The magnets were the size of a half-dollar!! With that being said, they put out decent sound for what they are I suppose. And you don't buy a truck for the sound system right?

Anyway, replaced the doors with Kicker 6x9's in the from and 6" rounds in the back. The dash speakers were replace a while ago too and I was truly amazed on how crisp and clean the highs were.

$200 bucks total, maybe a little less, and the sound is so much better.

The stock speakers are so light cause they use a neodymium magnet. I was shocked at how frail they seemed, though--almost like a toy instead of a real speaker.

I replaced only my fronts with the Kicker KS 6x9 series--much more robust than the stock speakers. The difference was remarkable. IMO the system is not necessarily underpowered, it just needs good tweeters to direct the sound and create a reasonable soundspace. I don't see the point in adding another tweeter to this, since the new speaker is a 3-way with a tweeter built in.

Life is too short to drive around with bad sound. I agree--replace (at least) the stock door speakers with a 3-way for the best bang for the buck upgrade.

    Completely agree...

I've now replaced the front door speakers on all 3 of our vehicles ('18 Tacoma, '15 Sienna, and '11 RAV4) and it made a noticeable and worthwhile difference in all.

I hate the I can turn my JBL factory system up to 45-50 on the dial and still hear myself talk. What would be options for replacing the already “upgraded” JBL factory speakers?

One suggestion would be to start with crutchfield.com and see what they recommend. They take into account whether or not you have the JBL system.

I used the Kicker 46CSC6934 in the front doors of my non-JBL Tacoma.

Put the Kicker CS 6x9's up front and 6.5's in the back. Night and day difference. I still need an amp though. I can crank that stock unit up to 45, no distortion, but still not fully utilizing the Kickers.

The stock speakers are higher technology than most people understand. They are niobium-magnet speakers that produce an impressive amount of sound for how lightweight they are, like the alpines below.

Not saying they can’t be improved, but people shitting on them are basing their opinions on dinosaur thinking. They are actually an impressive peice of kit, for what they are, even if not the best sounding.

Old-school speakers, like Kickers, are achieving what they do using mostly outdated technology like big magnets and iron. The OEM speakers are more advanced like Alpine and others are doing.

Lost my stock speakers long ago. Replaced with Focal components front and rear, JL Audio amp, LC6i (which was enough. You can really upgrade in this area). Theater quality sound now.

Not plug and play but you can buy the plugs and wire it outside the truck. Plugs right into the factory harness after that and no cutting required. It's also powered by the stock wiring so no running power through the firewall.
