E4 tax returns

Sooo..any E4 or near that rank out there tell me what they are getting for their tax return? I think I'm getting jipped...even for a CA resident.

If you are in the military, why in the heck are you a California resident? You can choose any state you wish, and yet you chose one of the highest tax states in the country? You should ask what it takes to change your state of residence with your admin people.

I spent my entire career as a Florida resident. Why, you might ask, because they don't have a state income tax. I think I was stationed in Florida for 14 of those 20 years, but I was also assigned to Maryland, San Diego, and Norfolk. I maintained my Florida resident status the entire time. Don't think Texas has a state income tax either...nor does Nevada or several other states.

 

Why do tax returns have anything to do with rank?

Are you assuming pay is same, withholding is same, standard deduction only?

And as someone else asked, why a Cali residency?

 

And if you’re a legal CA resident but don’t live in CA, you don’t have to pay any state taxes while in the military.

 

Doubt your post will help anything, there are tons of variables between each persons claim. Silly pants.

You shouldn't get anything back, regardless of what you make. If you are, you're doing it wrong. I wonder though what makes you think you're getting gypped if you're asking TW for advice.
