Ok off topic: So the A-arms from a Pre-Runner (6-lug) will not fit into same locations as the 5-lug A-arms. ? I have not been able to find these 5-lug swap threads. If I have to re-locate the A-Arms, yes I could do that and agree, that would be a huge PIA. I thought all the frames and A-arms locations were same for 5-6 lug trucks. Just different geometry on the AArms and different spindles, steering arm and racks?

on topic: Non locker 3rd gen rear end. when I say "rear end or axle," I mean the entire rear and axle assembly, not the center section or individual axles. Wondering if the ABS pieces from 3rd gen swap onto 2nd gen, if I do the swap I have access to a rolled 6 lug pre runner with (cheap) front knees (a-arms, hubs, rack, etc. everything under the front end). if I do that I'll need a rear axle assemble with 6 lugs and good gears. The wheels and tires i have are leftovers from another build.

If you're going this deep into it, why not just grab a 3rd gen rear end of your choice and find out if it fits for yourself?? Post up the results here. Worst case you turn around and sell it - get your money back :notsure:

Off topic. Everything is different on the front suspension from the 5 lug to 6 lug. Strut buckets, cross members, control arms, mounts etc. The only thing a 5 lug is a good starting base for is being a cheap base to start from for something completely custom. This would be something like a 1 ton swapped SAS or some crazy J-arm style pre-runner build.

On topic also the 6 lug trucks are SOA yours is a SUA so you'd have to either swap to SOA or cut and weld new perches on the axle housing.

What are your intentions with the build? If you want to build a true prerunner you probably don't want ABS.

On topic: Non locker rear end. IE rear axle assembly, the whole segbang 4:30 out of a MT 3rd gen. will the ABS work?

Off topic: I can not find 5-6 lug conversion threads. Have been looking for a week. When they manufactured these trucks they had totally different frames with front A-arm locations for 5 vs 6 lug suspensions? I would think in the front end the Pre-runner A-arms, coiil-overs, spindle hub assy (the "knee") would fit into the 5-lug A-arm locations on the stock frame? I know things in the rear may be different with new perches etc. but as long as the width is close, the only real issue is wheather or not the ABS on 3rd gen axle assembly would work on a 2nd gen?

ovrlndkull has answered the big question. basically a different frame etc. under the 5 lug truck vs the 6 lugs. I though i could bolt up some Knee assemblies and call it easy. Nope. Thanks for the information, you have walked me off that cliff!! those specifics really helps me kill this idea. I should have led with 5-6 lug conversion and saved everyone time on this. Well, if anyone ever wants to know about LS swaps, let me know. That's usaully what I'm doing. I'll leave this little 4-banger 5-lug taco just as a perfect little stock shop truck with tons of life left. It has 33K original miles and is perfect, so I will not F it up. Thanks again for the replies guys.

Yeah, leave it alone until you decide to do a rock crawler on tons, mega-long-travel prerunner, or some other yuge project. Or just run it into the ground, most of the big-mileage tacos are little 5luggers that are too full of spite to die.

spoonman, knee assembly is what the wrecking yards call the front suspension: a-arms, spindle, hub, brakes, coil overs etc.

I mean, if you want to find a rolled 2nd gen truck to pull everything from, that might work. Probably the cheapest way to do it, with the least futzing. At that point it's basically a cab swap and done.

No computer needed for what I want. I just need to have the power to turn the motor. But I have to delve into it more

the lsd gets me by for now

The 3rd gen E-locker is not a motor that you can just turn on/off it's a completely different style that has some sort of PWM to it, a stepper motor of sorts best I can describe it. This is why I said it has to have some computer stuff to it with inputs and stuff for it to actually work.
