Tweeter replacement for jbl system

I ordered the Subaru kicker tweeters and went to replace them tonight only to find out the connectors are different. Is there an adapter or plug available or do I return there and go a different route? This jbl tear out has been interesting to say the least. And by the way the jbl has a similar crappy tweeter just like the non jbl system. It had a square two prong plug.

Are the plugs for the non jbl tweeters available any where? I can make something work I believe if I can source a plug that comes with the trucks without the jbl system

I also have the JBL (2 pin plug)and bought the Kicker tweeters (non JBL 4 pin plug) thinking the connector was readily available. Well I didn’t have any luck sourcing that connector. I lucked out with a local member that had cut his out for an upgrade he did and got his 2 connectors. I made a harness out of them and worked perfectly.

Maybe hit your local area thread and ask if anyone cut theirs out?

If I had to do it again I would have just went a different route.

 

I was thinking of the same thing and my plan was to get this 2.5" speaker from audiofrog that's designed to fit in the dash and then cut off the stock JBL connector and solder the wires onto the audiofrog speaker.

Maybe if you can figure out which ones are the positive/negative on the kicker tweeter you can do the same? Otherwise might have to return it and get something else.

I decided to tie into the factory wiring with wire taps. IF i was able to find the appropriate plugs it looks like that would have been an additional 45 dollars or so. The kickers had plenty of extra wire so i did not have to cut anything. i could have removed the plug from the factory jbl speaker but i still would have had to tie it in somehow to the kicker tweeter.

so far the kickers to me are a huge improvement of the stock tweeters.

 

With some minor tweaking you can fit a 3.5 speaker in there. I went the budget route and did the Skar SPX-T 1-inch tweeter. I clipped the factory plug married it to the new tweeter. I’m very happy with this and now the highs are much brighter than the factory JBL.

 

It’s not a tweeter, it’s a 2.5” midrange speaker. I have no idea what replacing it with an actual tweeter would sound like (way different frequency range, but 3 way 6x9s and nice rears might makeup for the loss?), but I’d be curious to know since most speakers in that size range are absurdly expensive or ORM replacements from other cars (IE, likely the sameish quality as the JBL).

Unfortunately, it seems like information on options or testing is pretty scarce. Folks who have tinkered with it have either said “replacement sounds good” or they’re people who’ve overhauled the whole thing. Not much in between or “replaced them with XYZ, then tried ABC” to know what is or isn’t a good idea.

 

They sound better than the factory stuff that’s for sure. Much brighter and clarity is definitely there. The the Subaru tweeter that everyone is doing wouldn’t work for us without modification. I may pull these out and grab a set of 3.5 coaxials and see how that works. I’m still within my return policy lol.

 

Will a 3.5in speaker fit in the opening with out cutting the dash?

 

It’s a 2.5-2.75” so it won’t.

With slight modifying, I was able to fit the 3.5 Infinity REF Coaxials in there. Sorry no pics, I was doing it pretty late in the evening.

The Skar tweeters were definitely on the brighter side when playing certain music so I returned back to Amazon. The sound is definitely more balanced with the 3.5in speaker. I'm actually pretty happy with the results and I didn't have to spend a ton. All in I'm less than 250 +/- a few dollars for all 6 Infinity speakers from Crutchfield. They are 3-ohm speakers as well so they won't suffer as much as 4-ohm speakers. Gets loud and I like it. Planning on amping them in the near future.

Now for that 8inch sub in the back. I've been doing some research on a replacement Sub and there's not much out there. I figured if I strengthen it some, use some rivnuts to bolt the subwoofer down or maybe use some type of wooden backing to sandwich the plastic between the subwoofer, I can get a Kicker Comp RT 8" sub in there without tearing the composite box to pieces. Worst case scenario... I just remove the passenger side panels and build a dual 8 box and mini amp rack. There's another person that relocated the JBL amp to the under-seat compartment. I may go that route as well. So many options..

 

There are shallow mount dvc 2ohm subs I think pioneer makes one as well as jbl.

 

I have a Rockford Fosgate P3SD2 8” being delivered today that I’m going to put in this weekend. There are a few options for shallow mount subs that will fit.

 

Definitely report back if you could. I’d like to keep everything fairly stock looking if possible. Would be even cooler if someone manufactured a box to fit the factory location. I see them for non JBL subs not us.

P300-8P in mine along with Punch 6X9s in the front and Punch 6.75in in the rear doors along with tweeters in the dash. That Punch 8" hits hard and fit perfect behind the passenger rear seat.

 

Yeah I’m trying to get one installed in the factory sub box and see how it sounds. If I have to pull my plastic out I’d probably do 2 8s. I’ve seen a few that don’t require a lot of air space to be efficient. Skar VD8s, CT sounds MESO 8s, Sundown SD-3s and a few others. I just wonder how many watts it can handle before it tears it up. I guess one way to find out.
