Any of you guys been out to the ”Bullhead Strewn field” for meteorites? I saw this reference for a single collection site, but its on the freeway and I was hoping to find a better map of the extent of it...

I’ve been getting out for an hour or two each afternoon on some nearby BLM parcels after work, and have been checking out some old abandoned once productive mine dumps with quartz bits all over them. But everything Ive found so far has been lots of bullet shells and shotgun pellets, and more recent illegal trash dumps filling up the prospects. Dang :( A problem of living too close to town... too many junkies.

Years back as a consultant I did endangered species surveys at different desert locations for tortoise, blunt-nosed leopard lizards, and SJ Kitfox. Plus a lot of bird point counts and some k rat trapping. Eventually I took it off my resume to stop traveling down south, but it was great experience and fun early on.

Ah, Sounds like we started out the same way in the same areas, my 1st work was with D. F. Williams on the Elkhorn Plains- Nitrats and Ingens. I also did a year stint in Buttonwillow, and I’m a Turkey Tech alumni from when they used to call it that.

So what are you doing with the detector these days?

You’re not kidding, like I mentioned above, I started keeping it in my truck and go out after work. I love these days when they are getting longer, also my schedule has been really easy these days. I think in total I’ve only really put in less than 10 hours on my new detector though, most of my time is been researching areas to go. The skunk is starting to bug me though.

Dreaming of what I'll get with my imagination.

I subbed for inspiration and knowledge. I'm building my rig now, got two jobs (full time bio job and side gig doing fun wildlife research), one wife, a 4 year old son, and a 4 year old daughter. Relax they are twins. In a couple years my rig will have the major work done and my kids will be ready for camping and desert trips. I figured then my money will be right to pick up a detector and start another obsession to get into on our camping trips and any wheeling trips. Plus herping, birding, tracking, and so on. I like searching for shit.

I worked throughout the Mojave, Carrizo, and north of vegas.

OK, so my birthday present just came and it is very heavy duty. It’s a rake, hoe and pick in one. Question: what would be the best way to attach magnets to it like an Apex pick tool has?

I see they weld on small rings and put the neodymium magnets inside them, but what is holding the magnet, epoxy? Or are just stuck in there by their own attraction?

Could just be pressed epoxy and rounded over the top edge.

I didn’t even think of that, you’re talking about epoxy putty? That’s a really good idea!

I have an Apex with three magnets and they are removable. You may want to be able to remove on occasion.

Another thing to consider when using a recovery tool with magnets on it, occasionally your iron target may disappear and you will be scratching your head, wondering where your target went.

That's never happened to me, though...
