The motor and trans doesn't seem to really break in quick, you'll still get the searching. But it'll feel far better at like 10k miles. Least thats what Ive noticed. Im at 18k now and outside of some niggling issues when I got it with batteries, the truck is solid. Feels the same as when I bought it. The volume is annoying, but easily fixed with some quick speaker or head unit swaps. Enjoy your whip, now go get it dirty.

Here are some pictures. It is kind of hard to see, I had to hold my phone in one hand and the hood in the other, with the hood fully open it's hard to see where the seam sealer issue is. [IMG]

I hope not lol. I am honestly blown away that the seam sealer is such a big issue. It is so easy for them to check before delivery. Oh well. It's getting handled which is all that matters.

I wish new buyers would get off the "gear hunt" wagon. Good grief, this has been talked about for years, and you get to test drive... If you're surprised by this you've been living in a cave. It's an under powered engine and Toyota has tried to compensate that with funky transmission shifting. It is what it is. I knew all this going into buying my third Tacoma (second 3rd gen) and although I don't like it, I knew up front what is was and overlooked it because I like the other benefits of the Tacoma. And for my driving style, I don't experience excessive gear changing issues. YMMV

    Can not afford.
My first 3rd gen did not act anything like my 2020.
I dont like it but with miles it does to seem much better.
Hit 6500 miles today and love the truck.
I need a wench before I have to walk.
Anybody want to donate to my cause?

Dang man, OP just stated he knew about the hunt issue before purchasing, i don't think he was bitching about it as much as just letting other prospective buyers know its still an annoyance for those who care.

As for funky transmissions, tons of manufacturers are switching to more gears for fuel economy so this "gear hunt" is only going to become more common. I drove my sisters QX60 the other day and noticed it hunted thru the gears on the highway quite a bit as well.

My first truck was a 1973 Chevy C10. No AC, manual steering, manual brakes, and no radio. It rode like a bucking bronco. And for you long bed guys, the bed was 8 foot long.
I can appreciate the creature comforts in my 3rd gen. Even if it doesn't have automatic headlights :)

My 2004 Chevy S10 had auto headlights. My 2013 Tacoma did not. I'd gladly sacrifice ANY QoL feature just to not have a water pump break open at 40k miles. Or A/C compressor locking up. Or transmission breaking. Or catalytic converter failing...

Exactly, I knew about it, it was present on the test drive. It just comes up so often I felt like I should let people know that it is still a thing. If it bothered me that much I never would have purchased the truck.

Op thanks for the report. I'm at 1,100 miles on mine, and have somewhat the same experience. Not worried about it. I'm grateful to own one actually. Happy with it for sure. The cruise control is unbearable. The other day it down shifted at 4000 and it went to 5....lmao. I wanted to burn it to the ground. Lmao.

Okay, maybe I was a bit over the top. I just get tired of hearing this same complaint.

    Working on it ...
Just broke 4000 miles on my 2019 TRD sport DCLB. First automatic truck in over 30 years. There was a little bit of adjustment period going on between both me and the truck. But now I have to say everything seems to be working as designed and pretty dang happy with it.

I just hit 4800 on my 2020. With audio I upgraded all my speakers and it improved it greatly and for transmission I’ve found if I’m doing below 60mph I drive it in ect+s4 and over 60 mph its ect+s5 it seems to really help when on the freeway using cruise control

My guess is the seam sealer on the hood is robotically applied.

Same here except I’ll bump up to s5 at around 50 mph. With a lift and 33” tires this truck never ever goes to 6th gear so locking up at s5 and it drives perfect. No hunting

Ok, just thought I'd throw in a few comments as well (being a new member).... I've had mine for about 2 weeks now. I haven't notice much in the way of gear "hunting" and definitely drive daily on some hilly country roads... but I haven't hit the highway much. I've been playing with ECT and S drive/gears some... notice an improvement climbing hills, but I mostly keep in in D for my daily commute. I really love the truck, though still getting used to driving it (previous vehicles were Audi sport sedans). I'm still figuring out the optimal storage locations for my miscellaneous items (e.g. sunglasses, umbrella, tailgate key, cell phone when driving, etc.) other than just thrown in the glove box or center console.

I am definitely interested in this hood seam seal issue. I recall test driving a different off-road and instantly noticed the hood vibrating like crazy on the highway. I haven't seen this (yet) on mine, but I really want to check it out now at highway speeds. I'm also getting a bed mat and tonneau cover delivered today, so pretty pumped about getting installed this weekend. Again, just loving it so far!
