I have seen 3. It is not a comfortable feeling. It was great to see them don't get me wrong but when you think these cats can take down a full grown Mule deer as easy as you house cat takes a bunny it's a little unnerving.

And they do it once a week or so.

I've seen two in my lifetime - and you know how much time I spend outdoors...
One was when I was about 5 or 6 and mom and I went for a walk just outside of the campground we were staying at. It crossed the road ahead of us, less than 100 yards away. Mom grabbed me and made a bee line for the outhouse that was at our 3 o'clock. I broke free and ran back to camp and dad and the guns. Ran up to dad, out of breathe and scared and told him that a mountain lion had mom trapped in the outhouse. Thankfully he believed me, threw me in the truck, went into the trailer for the gun and drove up to rescue mom from the outhouse. We then drove around the rest of camp and warned everyone about seeing the lion but never saw it the rest of that trip.
Second time was just a couple years ago. I was heading down to Yellowstone after work and even though it was still pretty early in the evening it was raining really hard so it was almost pitch black out. I was just about the only car on the road and was taking my time, watching for wildlife crossing the road and windshield wipers were on high. Came around a corner and caught some eye shine at the end of a section of guardrail. Immediately started to slow down. First I was thinking it was a bear based on height but next thing I know a mountain lion comes slinking out from behind the guardrail and right in front of Runner and I. It kinda paused in the middle of the road and looked at me before running the rest of the way across. I was just sitting stopped dead in the middle of the highway in the dark in the rain on a blind corner like  I pulled over and kinda looked for it was it was raining so hard and there was so much brush I couldn't see where it had gone.

If getting down to the Tetons wasn't such a pain in the ass in the winter I would have gone down there in January just for this. She hung out just outside of town for almost a week.
Local photographer caught her, tons of pics on his website

    Sure you do.

So I'm out quail hunting. It's 1994, I've got a shotgun with bird shot and a 9mm on my hip the first 5 rounds are snake shot. It's been a good day. I'm in rural Arizona, it's October, and I'm on my way back with 7 large birds. I cut through an arroyo on the White House Ranch (10 miles north of Benson) and run into a gigantic cat.

I mean HUGE. She's gotta be 200 pounds easy.

    "ohfuckohfuckohfuckohfuckohfuckohfuckohfuckohfuck"

I am holding the shotgun two handed, and the three rounds of #7 ain't gonna do shit to this cat but piss it off. I slowly start reaching for the 9mm when she hisses at me, turns around, and saunters off.

    "Breathe. Just breathe."

I relax, turn around, and I'm 20 feet from the biggest fucking bull I've ever seen. I know this bull. He has one horn up and one horn down. He's called "Ace" because he was founf after a thunderstorm surrounded by 5 dead coyotes."

    "ohfuckohfuckohfuckohfuckohfuckohfuckohfuckohfuck"

Can I assume from the fact that you're still here that you choose to hunt with at least one person who runs slower than you?

 Good morning friends, and Andy too.

Getting my gear together for another trip out to see the Monkey in the Mountain. High winds last couple days mean drifts again. So Bear and are riding shotgun in the Jeep again and I'll be playing winch monkey. Trail condition report is bad, but I'm starting to think the locals reporting dramatize it a bit 'cuz they live out there. We'll get in, might take a while...see can we beat the 3 1/2 hours it took last Thursday. I need to make a tally card to keep track of winchings this time. :)

Top shelf in utility room...and thanks.

    Nope, not gonna look.

No cows or calves around. He looked at me like I wasn't worth the effort and walked away.

When I told the story to the ranchers later (they paid $25 a tail for coyotes) they told me about Ace's protective tendencies and that he was to be avoided when he wasn't alone. He didn't give two shits about me - he was watching out for the cat.

There's many sightings of Mtn lions here in Socal even up here in the High Desert . I remember having a very close encounter with a Mtn lion 40 some years ago during a backpacking trip in the Eastern Sierras . I was hiking along a trail heading down towards a lake when I heard the familiar growl from above me along a ridge

I found a large branch along the trail and started hitting trees and boulders and yelling and after about 10 minutes it ran off and never heard seen it again

I swear I saw one once. I was driving at night and saw what appeared to be a large cat like animal run across the road at full stride about 200' away. It had a tail like a mountain loin.

We had one killed on the Merrit Parkway a few years back but the State denied they live in the state and someone must have "released it". @bucktales - that one was down your neck of the woods.
