I'm set to deploy out in October. I will have to keep a eye out for these guys. ​

My step-Grandpa, Joyce Pipkin, married my biological Grandma (Grammy) in 1977. I always called him "Mr. P"; Mr. P, for lack of a better term, was a badass...

He got into the University of Arkansas on a football scholarship, but enlisted in the United States Navy a short time later since the US had formally entered WWII. He became a frogman and was stationed primarily in the Pacific. He was always happy to share stories of his time in the service when he was alive...

One time, he was somewhere in Japan and these two Japanese soldiers were snooping around an allied outpost of some sort (I forget where); Mr. P hit in a pile of supplies or possibly a storage box and waited for the two hapless enemy soldiers to get close...

Mr. P was probably 6'4" in his prime; Once they were close enough, he jumped out from his hiding place and yelled...

Both soldiers turned tail and ran off screaming; Mr. P had his sidearm but did not have to fire a shot!

lol... seriously though, you will find them all there.

 

Doubtful anyone in here has. The last one to be decom'ed was the Missouri, it was right after I went in.

 

After going on the tour of the Wisky, one thing that amazed me was how many men it took just to keep one engine running! The Iowa-class ships all had FOUR engines!

 

The Missouri was lobbing shit at Iraq during the first Gulf War. Many of us on here served during that period, some may have been on her or in the same battle group at least.

 

Very well could be. All I know is it was decom'ed in '92 right after I went in '91. It was the talk of the fleet at the time.

 

Nine years after I first enlisted... Thanks for making me feel old.

 

I've also heard that Iowa was in very poor repair when she was recommissioned...
