Ohh so it just drains more battery if you have it on? Gotcha!

Yes, The setting will speed up the location updating when it is plugged in to power (charging) and lower it back down when it's running on battery to save power.

I’ve used GaiaGPS extensively for hiking and backpacking, including using it to record a track of my hike on the John Muir Trail for 19 days. In airplane mode(since there was no phone service) I would get 3-4 days of power from my phone even with the tracking feature running for 8-10 hours a day. Obviously this is not an issue when it is plugged into a vehicle. I’ve found it to be very accurate in terms of the tracks it records and the current location it gives you.

Another recent change that is a game changer for GaiaGPS is there new topographic base map Gaia Topo which I find to be a really good topographic map and the best part is that it takes up a really small amount of space when you download it to use for offline use. The entire Western US only takes up 4.5 GB on my phone and an an entire state only takes up a few hundred MB. This is WAY smaller than most other offline maps on your phone.

I have used the CarPlay feature since it came out last week and it is going to be really helpful to have when traveling on dirt and 4x4 roads since Google Maps and Apple Maps are pretty limited, in my experience, when you are on a dirt road on public land. The $20/year for it is a bargain, especially when you have access to multiple different maps plus map overlays like hunting units, public and private lands, wildfires boundaries, etc.

I’m supposed to sell my '04 Tacoma tomorrow and will buy a 2020 Tacoma next week. I’m a Gaia premium subscriber and have used it for years. I’m soooo excited to have it in my new truck. It really is an awesome app for backcountry and other uses. I will miss my '04 though but it has served me flawlessly for 16 years with nothing more than routine maintenance.

What's the new topo US Topo or USGS Topo? I've been using Gaia Topo as my base and it's solid but hefty.

I did the same thing - sold my 2004 1st Gen and moved to a 2020. I loved the older truck and, like you, had no maintenance issues with it. But, while I miss it...this new truck is awesome and I do appreciate the tech upgrades and comfort of the new one. Enjoy your new truck!!

I downloaded the App and bought a year's subscription to give it a try. Planning a short trip this weekend so I'll use the Nav and see how it works.

The "NatGeo Trails Illustrated" Map in Gaia is hands down the best map for finding trails. Ive been using Gaia for years before i upgraded to premium which includes this map and its a real game changer

You can also have multiple layers which also gets mirrored on apple carplay

I was looking at this app last week, would there be any other discounts other than the $160.00 5 yr premium package. Or is that the best deal available? Thanks

Unless I'm missing something, the resolution on the Trails Illustrated maps isn't very good though. They start to break up as soon as you zoom in past a certain point, which for me makes them useful only for a general overview of a particular area.

Thats a bummer. I have been using the Nat Geo Forest maps and have been very impressed with them, so much so I bought the Atlas and the Atlas does not have near as much detail as the Forest maps. Hoping Gaia is using the Forest maps and not the Atlas for integration.

Edit: I have confirmed Gaia is using the more detailed Forest maps. These really are the best maps available.

Weird, as i sometimes find it too detailed at times when on the trail trying to use it. Works great for scouting new ones

Admittedly, I'm new to Gaia GPS. Perhaps I just need to play with it more.

I am also new to Gaia what I did was slide the slider all the way to the right. I have no idea if the slider is for more detail or for zoom? But it worked for me, I am going to attempt to upload some pictures.

Yes, the slider is used during a map download to adjust the level of detail in the copy you're dumping to your phone. I always have it pegged all the way to the right, for maximum detail.
