I'm looking to build mine low as i can (keep in mind I plan to have storage drawers built in my box, with a fridge on a slide out at the rear, and room for 3-4 totes on top of the drawers... the tent I would like to be able to adjust the height from as low as possible to a max of 6'4" (I am 6'2") and will allow me to use my annex. I plan to accomplish this with fitting 1" square tube welded/bolted tot he frame on the fronts/sides and using some inexpensive gas struts to assist.

something like this... but maybe a bigger box... on matching rims to my taco...

Depends on whether you plan on using a tent annex.

I looked at one similar. It used a scissor jack to raise and lower the tent platform. Neat setup. Not mine.

only real mod it needs is to get rid of that pintle hitch.. an offroad hitch of sorts will get rid of most slop, and rattles.. I can only assue you changed out the hubs for the 6x5.5 bolt pattern. my only concern with the military trailers is the weight.. while not horrible, they do add some un-necessary weight, where I would not, and others where I would.

We measured ours so that the tent, when closed, was just about the same level as the top of the roof the trucks.

Awesome thread, just reminds me how much I can't weld

Keep the pics coming for those of us who lack creativity and want to attempt something like this on our own!

sorry, just saw your question! It does, I built it with about 16" of lift. We pull the pins and with the struts only have to gently push it up to raise it and then lock the pins. Pulls down almost as easy and no electrical to mess with ;-). Keeps the top even with my tow rig on the road!

Built mine so we could lift it high enough to walk easily under it when the tent was open, I'm 6'. Prob gives us about 6'4" of clearance. It lets us us the annex room and floor without it sagging.

@Scott17818 trailers are new to me. Weight concerns are from which vantage point? Stopping, starting, or other? MPG take a big hit, I'll grant you, but have not seen much else.

all of the above especially if you are taking it offroading.. the weight can mean the difference of having to winch a lot, or not much.. basically think of it as dragging dead weight uphill, or through/over traction robbing obstacles. and mud holes.... basically makes it an anchor.. so as much weight you can shave off it the better. especially if you don't have trailer brakes/surge brakes on it. aluminum would be ideal, however it tends to crack when stressed, steel can stretch/bend to an extent, and eventually will break welds/crack, but is easily repairable in a shop, or with a set of batteries, jumper cables and either a welding rod, or a metal coat hangar..

design for weight savings can be key here. I'm planning out a box with either an internal frame, or a bottom frame covered in 1/2" UHMW.. playing with some 1/4" UHMW right now for drawer sliders on my bed drawer build. stuff seems fantastic it is slippery, and with a bit of wax on it... should slide very well and give me YEARS of service. stuff is used for the bottom hulls on airboats for S&R.. and when properly supported holds weight, and will allow the trailer to float/slide over rocks, mud/snow/sand...still in the planning stages right now...

Any interest in here for an M1101 or M1102? I am no longer going to continue my build on it. I ran out of time and damn homeowners restrictions for space. I have it set so that I can easily customize what is left for the buyer (i.e. Electric Brakes, Toyota Hubs, Tacoma Wheels, Lock N Roll, Max Coupler, Ball or Military Pintle) whatever you like. I have already rewired with 7-pin and setup for electric brakes. Both parking brakes are on it and work. Minor dings, but not damage and both landing legs. Can get pics and help with delivery.

Very close to what I bought 10weeks back. I bought here, https://expeditionportal.com/. This might be a tough time to sell with all parks on various stages of lockdown.

    Best wishes

They way it was in 1982. The first outing of my CJ-8 Bone stock. A lot of mods have come and gone since.
