Legroom in back of double cab

The Taco in general seems to have been designed around a VERY average height crowd. I fit this bill at 5'10" so with my seat where I like it, there isn't a ton of room behind me, but I've had 2 adults and a carseat in the back without complaints... and for shuttles we run for remote kayak runs, i've regularly had 5 adults of all sizes in the cab though this rarely exceeds 45 mins or so. It's roomier than I thought it would be back there honestly, but no you won't have 6' folks happy to sit back there and if you are very tall, the seat behind you is only good for small children who are front facing. We have an infant and I have our rear-facing in the middle so it extends into the armrest area slightly and doesn't prevent us from having the seats as far back as we need.

 

Not only is the legroom cramped for tall people, the headroom is as well, if you get the moonroof option. I'm 6'-2", didn't have much comfort back there, but since I will be driving most of the time didn't sweat it. It's still tight up front for me though, but it works.

I consider the truck a three man vehicle for any lengthy trip, as I need to move the seat all the way back to drive, rendering the seat behind me useless to an adult. That's the dog or gear seat.

 

Awful, 5’11’’ most uncomfortable front seats, don’t adjust sit too low to the ground, knees hitting the steering wheel. No room on backseat floor even for a gym bag.

Depends how tall the people in the front seats are. When my wife drives and i sit behind her i have tons of space in the back. Shes 5'4" and i'm 6'2".

If i'm driving she can still fit behind me but its cramped.

For kids, they have enough room in the back unless you have a rear facing carseat.

 

I'm 5'11" and its fine back there for adyults of similar height. It may suck for a 6 hour drive, but this is a bit of a over exaggeration.... How do I know, we have put two adults back there with a forward facing kiddo seat MANY times and complaints have not come...

 

Anyone have a GTI and Tacoma? Trying to get a feel for the space back there compared to the taco. In my research, it appears the GTI may have a couple more inches of legroom, but was wondering if anyone can provide an anecdotal. My kids, one in a booster seat and the other in a full size front facing car seat, complain about the leg room every time we get in the Tacoma. I am thinking of trading in my other car (wrangler TJ) for a GTI but was curious if I would run into the same problems that I have with the taco. I know the GTI is small and there are easier ways to solve this, but I’ve always had my eyes set on that as a second car, just don’t want two cars that will make the kids miserable in. The front facing car seat should be switched with the booster in about a year which will free up some room for the younger one.

Also, my wife and I are relatively small 5’9 and 5’3 so we don’t have the chairs that far back at all.

It’s relative. I traded I a BRZ for the Tacoma. My teenaged kids think there is much room in the backseat!

Couldn't agree with this more, you're going to just have to go sit in one for yourself to truly have an understanding.

 

I traded in a GTi for my Taco. My son is now 8 1/2 and in a booster and fits fine. In the GTi my kid was in a rear facing then switched to a front facing in the Taco. I can't see the front facing being an issue in the GTi, but take your seat to a VW dealer and try it out. I feel like the GTi had more room as I don't think I would even try a rear facing in my Taco, but baby seats vary wildly, so your experience may vary.

Comparing to a sedan though, I’d imagine you’d have more (maybe slightly more) room in the taco?

I had a '16 GTI 4-door that I traded on the Tacoma. I think there was more leg-room in the GTI back seats than the Taco. They were also more comfortable. After trying the double-cab I said screw it and bought the Access-cab for the 6' bed.
Even worse was the lack of acceleration after being accustomed to the 2.0 turbo.

I loved it but friends with VW's all had problems outside of warranty. I also grew to hate the lack of ground clearance and headlights in my rear-window. Older folks all had trouble getting in and out of it. I also may have broken the speed limits every time I drove the thing.
I'll get an R32 at some point but always keep the pickup.

 

Not for nothing, but my 12 GTI base 4 dr with DSG was more reliable than my Taco has been. Or my FJ before that. I had a heat shield rattle and that was it. Peak torque from 1800-5600 RPM is nice.

I traded it in before the warranty ran out lol. In an ideal world I would have my GTI and Taco.

 

My wife absolutely hates the truck on long trips. I’m 6 foot and like to sit relatively close to the steering wheel and if I go behind the drivers seat I have sufficient leg room. The part that really sucks is Toyota barely left enough room under the front seats for the rear passengers to extend their feet. Add Toyota all weather mats and now you really have no room for your toes. The rear passengers have decent “room” but are confined to keeping their legs bent 90 degrees. Also, the front passenger runs out of flat footboard before you have to start putting your heels on the angled part under the glove box. The other thing that sucks is the seat cushion is so short and the seats are so low you barely have any leg support. I’ll try some seat risers which might help the front and rear passengers a bit. While I will say the Tacoma isn’t all THAT bad it’s also not great. I think the second Gen front seats provide better support on the butt cushion for sure. I sat in the back of a Ranger and was able to have a lot more space to stretch my feet under the front seat which I wish my truck has. Frankly I really like the truck and overall it’s decent even with its quirks. If I ever end up selling it then I’ll probably get an F150 or similar. Lastly, I’ve got our car seat dialed nicely and even rear facing it still allows the seating positions we want in the front. But the inside is definitely cramped with it. Luckily car seats are only temporary, which I considered before buying my truck. I definitely think an F150 is a way better “family” truck but really, my Taco is 100 times better than my old Cherokee XJ but better off road than a F150. And that’s what I wanted.

 

I’m 5’11 with the seat positioned .There is no way I would have a adult sitting Behind me unless they had no legs ..lol. Still more leg room than my old mustang . No clue why it even had a back seat lol .

 

My teenage son, who is about 5'10" just rode in the back of mine to and from a 4 hour family vacation. He didn't complain a bit. (And trust me, he'd say something if he was irritated.) My daughter, who is a bit shorter rode in the back on the way home, also with no complaints.
