I've got a not-so-random question...

When did they do away with the DoD windshield stickers?

My parents bought my current Tacoma as a gift when I finally got my learner's permit; We bought the truck new in September 2009, and since the truck was in my dad's name back then, he got a DoD sticker for it in case he ever had to drive it on base (My dad was in for more than 20 years, and he was still able to utilize on-base services despite having been retired almost two years). In pictures from 2009-2011, you can still see the DoD sticker in the center of the windshield, but it was long gone by the time my dad signed the title over to me in December 2016; My dad scraped it off at some point after finding out they were no longer required to get on base (but well BEFORE he transferred the title to me), but I forget exactly when...

My uncle, who was in the Army for close to 25 years (early 1970s-1996?), still has a well-worn DoD sticker on his 2002 Nissan Frontier that he bought brand new, even though everyone I know who's in the military solely relies on an ID to get on base nowadays...

My dad's 2013 Honda Pilot, that he bought new in May 2013, never had a DoD sticker that I can remember; I'm guessing they did away with them prior to May 2013...?

 

My dad always told me that by supporting him in his Navy career, my mom and I were serving our country too...

I forget when it was official, but basically a money saver. I believe not too long After sept 11, since they had to check id's any how

I’m confused now, because my Tacoma had one on it from 2009 until at least 2011; Probably 2012 or so...

 

You could get them but not mandatory...like before, if i need to get on base i have to show id.

 

I remember this one time in 1996 when we were getting ready to move from Pennsylvania to California; We did not own a pickup truck at the time, so my dad borrowed his brother’s 1994 Ford Ranger to move some stuff. My dad was stationed at NAS Willow Grove, and we drove to the base to do something. At that moment, my dad realized they would not let him drive the Ranger onto the base because it didn’t have a sticker...



I forget what we ended up doing, but we did end up getting to drive the Ranger on base; Unfortunately, there was a bureaucratic procedure my dad had to go through instead of simply being waved onto the base...

 

No need when all bases went to 100% ID check of all vehicle occupants. Some bases still do it but it’s not mandated.

 

I still have a military ID for health insurance purposes since I’m still on my dad’s policy...

 

Yep - don’t lose that. Your dad had to go through hell to get you that since you’re over 21.

You also have a great dad who loves you enough to go through that trouble. It’s the weirdest, most frustrating paperwork I’ve ever had to do...and I served 22 years.
