Thank you I love it and the hand winding created a connection, plus you can dress it up or down easily and it's a very versatile watch. The marketing for it being the moon watch is a cool story too.

That is very interesting. I thought only the Sea Dwellers were built in the COMEX variant, guess not. Very nice and excellent shape. That is a gem.

You are absolutely correct. The last COMEX variants were delivered in 1997, and they were all Sea-Dwellers. The bigger cased Deep Sea Sea-Dweller wasn't introduced until 2008. I wanted something that never existed, so I married a DSSD type case, COMEX dial and SeaGull movement. It's my homage to a watch which never existed. When anyone asks, I always explain that this is not a genuine Rolex as they never made this model with that dial.

I also have a black Pro-hunter Piccard DSSD that is not genuine. Why? Well I really love the style and the life of Jacques Piccard is just friggin amazing. If anyone asks about this watch, I tend to ramble about the man, not the watch. The real ones were limited to 86 and prices at auction were around 40K. There is also some conflict that Pro-Hunters aren't accepted by Rolex purists.

I would love to get a real Rolex or Omega one day, but my tastes vary too much to commit all my money to one watch. If I can have 10 Seikos for one Omega, then I go that route every time. I suppose that's how I ended up with over 50 watches (I think).

Thanks, I'm just a dabbler. I got involved with watch and leather-working for a while, then my wife, truck and house started taking up the majority of my time. I still have a very nice Swiss movement that needs my attention (I think the keyless works are messed up), but after quite a few attempts I decided watchmaking wasn't for me. You need patience, a very clean environment and practice. Every time my tweezers launched a screw into the carpet, I would curse and quit for the day. Maybe one day I'll setup my bench and try again. The smallest screw on my truck is about 10 times bigger than your average movement screw.

If I ever take the plunge on a watch more than 1K; it is good know it will be a worthwhile investment. I guess they are like a Mercedes or Porsche (or even our Tacos) in terms of holding value. I just can't decide :)

Today, I'm wearing an old friend. A Seiko 6309-7040 that was made in April of '82 (according to its serial number). This watch was found in Hong Kong by a fellow collector who restored these old classics and forwarded them on. The dial and hands were replaced as part of the restoration. Originally, I picked out a classic dial with dot style hands, but later decided the look was a bit odd. After wearing the watch a few years and reluming the dial myself, I decided to upgrade the look. I found a nice North American 6309 dial and sourced some 6105 hands. While the dial fit great, the hands would not fit the posts. Fortunately, I had some cockpit style hands that worked much better; and thus was born a unique Seiko.

I love watches and really enjoyed paging through the last 77 pages of this thread! I'm home sick so this was something to do for a while (just a cold not the corona virus).

Unfortunately my budget doesn't allow me to hang with the really fine time pieces that many have posted up here, but I'll share my meager collection.

First are my "everyday watches", the venerable timex weekender. I needed a watch I could wear everyday comfortably, that kept good time and was easy to read, that I wouldn't cry over if it got broken or lost, and that even the DC crackheads could recognize as too cheap to try to mug me for. Timex fits that bill perfectly they are an extremely practical watch, but they are so freaking loud! I actually get a lot of compliments on the timex watches.

    20200310_104039.jpg

The beat up one on the right was my father's watch. We lost him this October. When my mom asked me if I wanted anything to remember him by, I immediately said "his cheap ass timex watch he wore every day". Dad and I had similar views on an every day watch I guess.

Next up is my Rolex Daytona.

    20200310_104357.jpg 20200310_104419.jpg

Okay, my VERY OBVIOUSLY FAKE Rolex Daytona LOL! I bought this while I was traveling in China knowing full well what it was and wasn't. I love it for many reasons but mostly the experience. I had a local guide showing me around Beijing and when she asked me if there was anything else I wanted to see I was like "yea, where do they sell all the cool knock of crap?". So she takes me to this basement in an old run down mall to this place that had mostly fake flowers and baskets and shit for sale. She says the magic password or does the hands shake or whatever (big dumb white guy has money), and they open up a hidden door to a whole other shop full of knock off watches and hand bags and stuff. Very surreal and such an only in China moment!

I actually wear this on occasion, and it's a surprisingly decent watch. Many people that don't have a good eye think it's real until I tell them otherwise which is kind of sad.

Now onto my favorite watches. This Seiko is the first "real" watch I ever bought. It was back in high school when a local department store closed so they had deep discounts on everything I the last couple of days before they closed. I think retail on it was over $300 and I got it for like $50 or so. That probably means it was actually worth like a hundred bucks or so but I was very proud of it.

It's a Seiko kinetic watch. Unfortunately I took it apart and replaced the crystal and the little rechargeable battery in it myself. The crystal turned out pretty good but the watch will not hold a charge, so I guess I botched the battery/capacitor replacement. I keep it because someday I'd love to have it fixed but I doubt the cost would be worth the value of the watch, particularly since the watch maker would have to deal with my diy job. I'm open to thoughts on this if anyone has any. I'd love to have this watch working again...

And last but not least my all time favorite watch, and it seems I'm in good company with @crashnburn80 my stauer dashtronic. I saw this watch in an ad in one of those in flight magazines and was totally in love. I tire out the page and gave it to my wife saying "either you get me this for my birthday, or I do!" And yes she got me the watch. I get lots of compliments and questions on this watch when I wear it.

    20200310_104236.jpg 20200310_104301.jpg

I would very much like to get one or two of the actual vintage "jumping movement" watches that this design is based on some day.
