It would have been nice if they put locking door like on the highlander. It just keeps lazy thieves moving on, but not motivated ones.

As someone who parks their Tacoma at remote trailheads while hunting I've always used a locking gas cap to prevent vandalism. The green animal rights crowd share the same parking areas and I've seen hunting vehicles vandalized.

My locking gas cap has been on since the truck was new from the dealer last march. No issues yet.

I bought one from autozone, pos, threw a code after a few days. My last '17 Tacoma's OEM cap did the same thing oddly, I put a smidge of dialectric grease (ok I MEANT to put a smidge...got a gloop) on the oring and that fixed that. Do that with all my gas caps now.

Just got my Stant in yesterday but haven't put it on yet. It feels much better hand turning than that duralast one...but we'll see. My "best locking gas cap" search yielded stant at the top of lists often. I got mine from Amazon.

I thought a locking gas cap was a good, fail safe idea. Sure enough, I got an error code and the stock cap is back on. For anyone who can’t get rid of the error code, the solution is on another thread: disconnect the negative terminal on the battery for a bit.

After coming out from work last year (I work at large hospitals in big cities) I found my gas door open a few times, nothing taken or messed up but I never forget to close the door, thankfully I always saw security doing rounds so I don't know what happened...and with gas prices like they are now...you BETTER lock it!

which one did you get? only one I've heard AND experienced no codes with is the stant, all the others are garbage so far.

Its simple enough with a battery powered drill to punch a hole in your gas tank if they want your gas bad enough. A locking cap really isn't much of a deterrent for that. I put mine on mainly to discourage vandalism with these bozo's here that think its funny putting chit in your tank, so far i think its helped.

Locking Stant gas cap hasn't given me any codes. Around here, we have had big city meth heads/drug dealers and assorted 2am riff raff flood into town.

I had a Stant one on for a few months. I got it from O'Reilly's. Someone said it was a counterfeit because it didn't look right. Keys weren't all metal or something. I just think they're made a little differently now. Cutting costs and whatnot.
Never got any error codes and it worked great...until it didn't. Stopped turning and clicking and locking correctly so I had to remove it before it got stuck on permanently. Only lasted a few months, maybe it was a knock-off?

Stant hasn't given me any codes in a year. Just be sure it clicks once after you twist it tight. Be sure you get the legit Stant (will have a raised S) from O'reilly Auto.
