Definitely get at least a 1tb if you plan to have many games installed at once. With 11 Steam games and the usual productivity software installed, I've chewed up about 500gb of a 1tb 850 EVO, and that is with all of my pics, vids, docs, archives, etc all stored on a separate 6tb spinner.

SSD drives separate out under heavy productivity use, not gaming. To be honest for gaming you could buy a brutally bad solid state drive like a 660P and still never notice its faults.

Would you trust your brutally bad solid state drive to save your valuable save games that see lots and lots of writes?

I've seen one SSD fail in the last year in our enterprise DC. If that was one SSD in my non-RAID home computer system, well I'd be kinda fucked except for backups.

I never said I would. Actually I have anything important cloud saved. Local storage doesn't make sense to me anymore for anything important that isn't really private.

My point was that if the conversation is which SSD to buy based on speed you'll never notice the difference, at least not in gaming or short term use. The differences sort out under specific heavy loads or long term use. Faster more expensive drives tend to use better controllers and NAND than cheaper drives, which shows up only in specific use cases and/or over time.

Funny story about SSDs. NAND flash has both a minimum and maximum operating temperature. Some custom mother board water blocks have alot covers for the SSD which is actually horrible on the drive. Most NAND needs to operate above 30c in order to function correctly for the normal amount of time. Anything under that can damage the NAND and dramatically increase wear and tear on the flash.

This is also why a heatsink on really low end flash can also hurt its performance. Finned heat sinks should only be used with PCI-E 4.0 drives at this point in time.

Mine came with the 240gb green version. Does just fine for now, but I’ll upgrade to a 1TB down the road as well

Ah, I've always stuck with Blue or Black as far as WD goes.
I have the Blue 500GB SSD for startup, etc and a 6TB Black HDD for movies/media, etc

Eventually/ideally I'll upgrade the SSD to >1TB and the media will move over to NAS.

Anyone see the latest 10th gen desktop Intel leaks? An i7 10700 only manages to tie the 3800X in performance while drawing over 250 watts doing it. That's right, Intels 8 core is going to draw the same wattage from the wall as AMDs 16 core at full boost yet only yield performance that matches AMDs 8 core part. Ouchie if that's true and how the hell do you cool a 250 watt part? I have trouble cooling my 3950x across all cores and it hits around 200 watts when maxed out across 16 cores. I can't see how you'd manage to keep any 10th gen i7/i9 Intel parts cool without a custom water loop.

Of course I bought my 8700k processor right as AMD was starting to hit their stride with their new processors...

Still a solid cpu, and pretty unmatched for gaming for the price point. I have noticed it cost more now than it did on release which is odd.

Speaking of cooling, what's the cooling of choice for big boy rigs? Just so I can plan 3 steps ahead.

Apparently there are non ball bearing fans out nowadays. Magnetic something, something.
Havnt read to much about them.
I run a corsair H100i, it's old but does the job.
Noctua? Always seemed to make nice cup fans.

My 90 dollar cooler master240 aio does pretty well. Not as good as my h115i did but well corsair pumps cant be trusted these days. 25c idle 70-75c under load.

Fractal seems to lead the quality scores in AIOs. I haven't had one of their units go yet. Almost all AIOs are made AseTek but they do change components and quality between brands based on what's ordered. Fractal comes with compression fittings on the braded tubes and a high hour MTF pump. They scream quality.

Curious as to why you're single 120mm fan AIO isn't on a vent instead of in front of the case? The airflow through that radiator won't be enough to match your exhausts and you're going to run negative case pressure, which decreases cooling efficiency and leads to dust buildup on the heat sinks on the graphics card.

Putting the 120 mm radiator on top or the back won't hurt cooling performance and will let you move two good fans upfront to run positive case pressure. It'll save cleaning time in the future.
