Finally picked up my first 3D printer. I got a Prusa i3 MK3S kit. Got it put together and have been having fun printing various things. Now I need to start with some functional things and this thread will give me a good start :D

    Howdy All,
Sorry for disappearing! Life takes off fast and I have been married for almost a year now! I hit the front page as a guest just to dream about the awesome builds on here and this thread was in the most recent threads so after looking at it quickly I had to reset my password and get logged in to comment. Holy crap there is some cool stuff happening in this thread. Look at that 1/9 Tacoma. Holy shit that's absolutely amazing!

As far as my current project status....... lol I still have not mounted my overhead light switches and have had an open hole in the front overhead panel for like a year. Wife and I are trying to start a family so I don't really see life getting less hectic.

I never got pictures up but MESO made good on his offer for some dope ass map lights and even tossed in a Gasshole. Dude is legit a stand up guy and I can honestly say that the stuff he is putting out is such a top notch quality its ridiculous. Stew, glad to see your killing it still on the business. Wife and I started up our own IT Consulting company so I have an even bigger appreciation for what your accomplishing. Unfortunately for me that means I spend all my project time learning new business skills and knocking out client projects instead of my own fun projects. You are a real lucky bastard that your passion aligned so well with your fun projects!

So glad that this thread has continued to be a source of inspiration, learning, and collaboration. You guys rock! One day Ill put up some pics of my finished overhead switch install, prolly after they release 5th gens.

Iteration number three of the square cupholder Baofeng holder. Printed in PETG to hopefully resist the temperature extremes of remaining in the vehicle. Haven't taken it off-road yet to see if the radio will stay put. The slots in front were intended for quarters. I think I'm going to remodel this to make the radio pocket just a bit deeper to fit the radio snug, and carve out the front where the quarters would be to use it for small trash items.

Just a question for you 3d printing folks in here. Are snap tabs (like the ones in the OPs first post) hard to produce without supports? It would be built UP from the base of the tab towards the upper clip portion. I am currently trying to design a part that fits into the holes in the pro grill and I'm trying to decide how to affix it.

I'm torn between trying to use snap tabs that just snap onto the back of the grill when inserted, OR, sandwiching the grill using two different parts and then just screwing them together. I don't have a lot of experience with the 3d printing end of things as I mainly work with sheet metal and metal fab.

I could probably get the entire thing machined from aluminum but it'd be expensive so trying to think about 3d printing it. I can provide pictures later on the horrible POS cardboard mockup of my idea.

Doesn't answer your question, but if I were doing it, I wouldn't use the 3D printed snap tabs as your only point of fixing. The way you're going to print it will more than likely put your printed layers along where the primary forces are going to be if and when there's internal forces on the grill relative to the body. Eventually it's going to sheer along one of those print lines, which are your inherently weaker layers. In theory the material should be of uniform strength in all directions. In actuality, that's more than likely not going to be the case. They should be cheap enough to buy hundreds on the dollar.

But you'll probably need supports that you can cut away when it's all done.

Makes a lot of sense and that's what I've been reading, the method that I'd be using to create the layers/tabs isn't the strongest. Best to create them from the side, working them in the width but that idea isn't feasible for the design of the rest of the object.

I may lean more towards the screwing it together by sandwiching it between two printed parts. I'm looking to design something something like this, please note the backing plate is missing from these pictures.

It's important to consider what you are trying to support. If it's a badge or an emblem that can just be reprinted if it falls off, is different than a light or something that could get damaged or damage the truck. Screws/bolts aren't perfect either because its just as easy to shear off if there is not enough material to support it.

It'll support a front camera (the candidate for now at least) that is light weight. Wiring should hold it in place should it "fall off", so it shouldn't go anyplace, but at the same time can still be damaged by flopping around like a fish out of water.

I did something very similar on my Jeep grille. I just made it a really tight friction fit then put a little hump on the part that hangs behind the grille. I had to use a heat gun to get my test print out of the grille. Been holding a camera on for 2 months now without issue.

Yeah, something like this would be easy to build and sandwich around the grill. You would also get your best surface finish on the outside face.
