"Only" passenger's door? You have a link to that info on the Highlander?

I thought I remembered passenger door only. I looked up the manual too and found the same. I’ve only messed with a highlander smart key system once.

Happy to report my passenger side door handle is now a smart door handle. Some tips that may be of trouble for those attempting this mod.

    1. Make sure the Terminals are seated in the housing. This was where we got the most adversity. The Housing facilitates the Terminals to the handle's prongs. If the Terminals are not FULLY seated you will not get a connection and the door handle will remain dumb. In the OP a small screwdriver was used to push the terminals into the housing which is a good tip. One could use needle-nose pliers as well. As far as we could tell there is nothing in the housing that ensures electrical connection. The housing's job is to bring the terminals and the prongs together for that connection and if the terminals are not fully seated you will come up short.

    2. Proper wire taps help. I used a "T - Tap" which was a little harder to get the wires to connect with such little space to work with. t-tap.jpg

My buddy used the screw taps which were very easy and almost assured connection once in place. wire tap.jpg

    2. Leave yourself plenty of wire in the door in case mistakes are made. I used wire taps and thought I had a bad connection (in reality it was the Terminal and the Housing interface) because I had extra wiring maybe an extra 1/2 foot, I was able to re-establish a new connection with my taps and start over. You also don't want the power windows catching your wiring either.

    3. Remember to take it slow and it might be a good idea to have another person there to help trouble shoot if there are issues. The boot is always an issue but slowly working the wire through the boot and using a coat hanger worked for us.

Must say this mod was definitely worth the time and effort to put in place.

I read the first 10 pages and back a few before I came across this. Can someone explain why exactly you have to change to unlock all doors on 1st? If we are tapping into the drivers, is it not just an extension of the drivers. Couldn’t you still keep it to unlock only drivers side (and thus passenger because it is an extension now)?

so essentially I’d like to keep the unlock setting to only drivers (with this mod now front doors) but keep the rears and tailgate on 2nd unlock. I’ll be putting in the oem tailgate kit and dont want to really hear or have the tailgate unlock every time (or the back doors really).

Is this really not a possibility?

You can assemble it yourself or contact @KTJO 4x4.
    upload_2020-2-28_3-29-52.jpg
    Connectors are same part # 90980-11537 & 90980-11536 for IC1 & IK1.
terminals are 090/2.3II types, male & female

The Passenger's door solenoid will be in parallel with the Driver's door solenoid. (twin)
The 2nd press unlocks the Rear Passenger Doors and the Tailgate solenoid.

Your logic flows until you get to that last part... Think this way - having the touch sensor available has nothing to do with the lock actuator. If you left the headunit setting as just drivers side, when you grab that passenger door handle, only the drivers side door would unlock... which doesn’t help you, currently standing on the passengers side... @caribe makaira’s solution solves that, or the headunit setting.

For reference, my Fob is set to first click drivers door, second all doors. But my handle grab is set for all doors.

That’s exactly how I want it to function! I’m guessing this diagram is just to mimic the passenger door to the drivers door but not including the smart handle wiring Or is the smart handle hookup in the diagram also? Although at the bottom of your diagram it mentions passenger side smart handle so does that mean instead of tapping the blue and green on the ecu (on 1st post) you tap the 9/10 on ic1 as pictured and done

And for this add on I’d need 2x 90980-11537 & 2x 90980-11536 (even with the oem tailgate harnes or can this be used instead) and 090/2.3II type pins 20x male and 20x female and obviously the wire. Anything else I’m missing?

    thanks man!

Ok that makes perfect sense now, thank you.

You could go that way, but that would mean removing the connectors fro their holders and de-pinning the required terminals.
Get the connectors (2 pairs) and assemble. You'll have wires that pass from one female connector to the male connector, then the wires from the Driver's solenoid will need to be double crimped (pass through wire and the wire going to the Passenger's side)(x2) for unlock & lock tap.
On the Passenger's side, the unlock of the door mates to the wire coming from the Driver's wires on on connector.
The Passenger's side Unlock & Lock wires go to the Tailgate solenoid wires on the other connector.
So 20 matching male & female terminals.

    Driver's side (IC1)
    1 matching connectors
20 pairs of male & female 090//2.3II terminals
Dual crimped wires on terminals coming and going to slots 9 & 10.
These are the Unlock & Lock sharing to the Passenger's side. (IK1)

    upload_2020-2-29_0-53-51.jpg

    Passenger's side IK1
    Matched pair of connectors.
10 pairs of male & female terminals 090/2.3II
Slots 4 & 5 are not connected to each side of the connectors, they are the inputs to the Tailgate Solenoid on one side. And the Driver's Unlock & Lock input to Passenger's Door Solenoid.

So with the oem tailgate lock harness it would look like this combined with the smart handle lock

It took a long time to do that on my phone between 2 apps

    No.
The OEM Tailgate harness would also need to be modified. (de-pinned)

What if I made the smart handle ik1 direct connect to truck then added the oem tailgate harness after- would I still need to modify?

edit: I see why pins 4/5 are separated on ik1. Give me some time to look over your diagrams and I’ll get it

If I just Depin 4/5 on this add on smart handle harness then that should work without even messing with the oem tailgate lock harness. It’s still taking away the passenger door unlock/lock going to the door and getting override with the drivers side passing over replacing 4/5 pins

Another option, if you have the skills/patience to de- pin the connectors. Remove the IK1 from its kick panel holder, identify the correct wires, release the terminal lock, depress the locking tab of the terminals, remove it. Place in new 2 slot connector. Repeat on other IK1 connector. Terminate (crimp terminals) the wires coming from the Driver's IC1, insert in the remaining 2 slot connector, mate them. The 2 slot connectors also have a lock bar which needs to be pulled up before inserting the terminals.
