Anything that uses anything is going to wear it out faster. That's just physics. Is it significant? Probably not compare to your daily stop and go driving.

    This thread sounds like this:

Person 1: These new daypacks are great!
Person 2: I prefer suitcases, they can carry much more.
Person 3: Sometimes you need a suitcase, daypacks can be too small.
Person 1: Why are you trashing daypacks?
Person 3: Well sometimes I need to carry more than what daypacks are capable of.
Person 1: You just don't know how great daypacks are.
Person 3: No I use daypacks, but sometimes I need to use suitcases.
    Person 2: I don't see why I'd ever use a daypack when I can use a suitcase.
Person 1: You people just don't get it.

actually sounds more like this lol:

Person 1: These new daypacks are great!
Person 2: I prefer suitcases, they can carry much more than purses.
Person 1: We are talking about daypacks!
Person 3: Sometimes you need a suitcase, daypacks can be too small.
Person 1: Why are you trashing daypacks?
Person 3: I'm not, but suitcases can be better for traveling.
Person 1: You just don't know how great daypacks are.
Person 3: No I use daypacks, but sometimes I need to use a suitcase.
Person 2: You see how little this purse fits!
Person 3: Dude, we're talking about daypacks.
Person 1: You people just don't get it... there is no need for a suitcase when you have a daypack.

Depends how much you use your A-TRAC vs. regular non-ATRAC use... Remember the other traction controls all Toyotas have now use the brakes... My truck has 17,000 miles and maybe 100 miles were using A-TRAC... pretty tiny. However, TRAC is on the rest of the time...

I will let you know when my brakes need servicing.

This thread is the definition of cognitive dissonance. ;) The proponents of each might as well stick their fingers in their ears and yell "la, la, la, la, la, la, la."

From the 12 pages, mostly the (1) sport model owners are in denial of the excellent performance of ATRAC. (Blue who!?)... I don`t see too many off road owners suggesting that lockers are not better in certain situations....... I think the sticking point is when the flat earthers deny the pros of ATRAC, and deny the disadvantages of lockers in many scenarios. I push my truck fairly hard, and I personally have no use for a front locker, because of ATRAC. Isn`t that the whole point of the OP?
Here`s a thought, is the locker worth the loss of rear ring gear strength? I don`t think so.....

I am not down on lockers, just 'up' on A-TRAC... It is cool, it works, we don't pay extra for it, and it is a Toyota product!

Is it better than lockers? That would be opinion, not fact... I have spelled out where lockers come short (steering/ cost) and a couple people who have both have said each has advantages... which I am happy to agree with.

The point was education... to find out why is it difficult for some to 'accept' it. It is obviously total lack of knowledge of the system or mis-knowledge by those looking for a reason. Some people with it don't even know how it works fully.

I ask that people have an open mind to it. A-TRAC isn't new... It has been offered on other Toyota and Lexus vehicle for about 10 years... and has been improved over that time. By the 2009 model year, Toyota must have believed it was finally good enough to add to the Tacoma line!

    Thanks everyone!

I dont think anybody is denying the pros of ATRAC. Its good system for what was design for.
However, I am disputing statements that ATRAC and F/R lockers are equal or that ATRAC somewhow is superior to F/R lockers. I am doing this because I understand laws of physics and vehicle dynamics. I also had seen Atrac (and its variations) in action.
I fully understand why David or anybody else in that matter is so impressed by it.
    :)
Again if I needed vehicle for DD driver, money was not a problem, and I was not plannign to keep vehicle longer then few years I would have opted for ATRAC package too. But I am not rich, and I need to make my vehicle purchases very carefully. That is why I opted out from TRD Offroad package. It made no sense to me to spend that kind of money. Mind you I have almost TRD sport, almost because I opted out of : fake scoop o n the hood, sticker o n the side of the truck and color trim. Saved myself almost $2k..

all kidding aside... i dont see one post where someone is dead set against Atrac...

just because soemone points out. Atrac is jerky doesnt mean its horrible... just because a front locker can cause axle damage doesnt mean he is saying a locker isnt awesome for traction and that it sucks...

its pretty crazy how if someone dismisses atrac or doesnt have it they are flat earther's or own arb stock... its as if it has to be taken to a personal level because someone not being absolutely excited for atrac: its like a personal attack to atrac lovers...
