I'm loving my 2020 SR access cab but I really wished they offered it with a short bed or even built the Regular cab version still. This thing is too big for inner city use. After many years of whining and not buying a truck I decided a year or so ago to stop whining and just buy something because life is too short, had some money to burn, love pickup trucks, and compact trucks will likely never exist again in this country. I realize most probably like and use the additional size but as much as I hated my 07 Tacoma Regular Cab it was better all around for my needs. To be fair my 2020 fixed everything I hated about my 07. I've seen compact trucks in other parts of the world but they'll never come here and it looks like Hyundai is never going to really build that Santa Cruz pickup they've been talking about for years. No regerts, just wondered if anyone felt the same.

You're right, but consumers spoke. There was no profit for Toyota to continue the mini trucks sadly.

Reg cab trucks are a relic now. Let alone work horse mini trucks.

    Looks good to me!
Some cities like Chicago are just overcrowded and anything more than a bicycle or scooter is too big.

I agree, the Tacoma has grown too big. I think the sweet spot is about half way between the older 79-95 trucks and even the 1st gen Tacoma (which were truly small trucks) and the current 2nd/3rd gen size. I think that would make them current Hilux size.

I have 2 trucks. a 2007 double cab long bed frontier, and a regular cab first gen taco. The taco is a parking lot ninja, but the nissan is a highway eating monster. Its all tradeoffs. I'm doing what I can though to keep the taco on the road because they literally don't make them like that anymore.

EDIT: Pretty sure the reason they've all grown is safety standards. Notice all the small trucks got bigger about 2005? Thats no accident.

You got that right, unfortunately I'm kind of stuck here. At least I moved just over the Chicago border so I get to live like a 1st world Civilized person on weekends and between projects.

Your Reg Cab Tacoma is beautiful. I like the color, the wheels, everything. Very nice!

I don't buy that has much to do with it. They could get a Smart car to pass crash tests and those were more strict than light trucks. We also own a 2017 Forester and the doors on it are no thicker than a 1st gen Tacoma yet it passes side impact tests.

I think the reason the truck grew is it's simply impossible to market a truck that gets smaller. It's always got to be be bigger and more powerful to make people want to upgrade.

Also all the trucks, 4Runner, Prado, Land Cruiser, Hilux, etc. have grown over time globally so it's not just U.S. EPA and DOT forcing it since not all of them are even sold here.

Love my long bed with a manual and 4x4, but I agree what made me love these trucks the most was seeing them in the 80’s when they were relatively small pickups. Those days are gone for so many reasons.

    Still thinking about it.
Well, the good news is... you can buy a used one from when they were small for a lot less money than a big new one. People get alot of money for well preserved examples but compared to new truck money, not much at all.

If they had made a regular cab 3rd gen I would have gotten that instead of my AC for sure. I live in a downtown area and if I didn’t have a parking spot I’d be fucked too.

Cheapest regular cab 2015 Tacoma I could find was $19,000 asking price and it was White with 48,000 miles. I found another 3 states away for $18,000 with 39,000 miles and looked like it was used for an Extermination company. For less than $5,000 more I went with a New Tacoma instead.

Same dilemma I had, and why I also ended up with a new AC a few years ago. Agree that it feels too big for city duty, but I've grudgingly gotten used to it over time. Hopefully the same holds true for you, eventually...

I took my new Tundra through downtown Chicago late last year. No problems no issues. We were shopping so we parked several times.

i would love to have a mini truck with a similar capability as my dcsb mt. I'd even be good with that as a pre runner if it came mt. absolutely.

Coming from a Cherokee XJ, sitting in a 2020 Tacoma was like "this thing is massive!"
