Possible cat failure at 40K

I suspect a possible clogged cat on my 17 OR Manual with 41,000 miles. Otw home from the gym I noticed I had a huge reduction in power out of no where. 65mph in sixth gear, if I floor it, it will not accelerate at all. The engine would scream, a hissing noise is coming from the passenger side very noticeable like in the door/floor area. No CEL or any dash lights. Limped home. In the driveway while in neutral just flooring the gas it still has the very loud hissing. No visible exhaust leaks and no noise until you get on it. I suspect the secondary passenger side cat is shot. Dealership will take it in on Monday. I suspect that will be the usual mess. Anyway, I will keep you all posted.

 

Any odd smells? Are you sure you haven't glazed the clutch?

 

I considered that. Clutch engages fine. Put in first, let out clutch, catches and drives. Put in 4th let out clutch, stalls like it should. Also, the symptoms are all there while sitting still in neutral, without the forward motion of course. I don’t notice any smells but I am also stuffed up.

 

Hissing noise..... Like your high pressure fuel pump has gone bad

 

Any check engine lights? Smog pump is the only thing that could make that noise.

 

No CEL.

 

If I’m correct the high pressure pump is in or near the tank. This sound is obviously coming from the passenger side cat under load. Outside of the truck with someone else flooring it you can hear it scream. Like it is bottled up but enough exhaust pressure shoved in will force a hole and make it through.

 

High pressure fuel pump is in the engine.

 

Good to know! Maybe that is the cause then. I look forward to finding out.

Your symptoms definitely sound like a clogged cat. If you have a temp gun point it around sections of the cats and compare inlet/outlet to both banks.

Doubtful your truck has run shitty enough to clog a cat with no CELs over time.
Use a temp gun to take inlet and outlet temps, a clogged cat will have a large difference in temps, as the hot exhaust gases cannot flow through.

 

Should it be the cat they're under warranty till 80k

Silly question but did you climb underneath to check and see if it was actually still there? Not sure what type of area you live in but where I’m from they have been getting stolen like crazy....

I can't imagine no CEL if a CAT went bad. That downstream O2 sensor would be going crazy so I'm going to guess fuel. Fuel is really not monitored by the ECU. Yeah it reads rich/lean, injector pulse crap but plug in a scanner and find the fuel pressure? (a scanner the common guy can afford) Lol. You may have fuel delivery, but do you have enough at the correct PSI..Just a guess. Put me in for $1.00 for the pool. Lol
