Hazard switch illumination

yes, but the 96 Corolla has a reddish/orange hazard light lol

except all my lights are all green but iirc the clutch start cancel button, i think that is orangeish
now i must go look at the lights because i have CRS

 

I had lights go out all the time in the dash of my 96 tacoma. Usually the most common bulb to go out, was the bulb behind the "D" for Drive. I had that one replaced 3 times over the course of the 23 years that I had the truck! the last time, was just before I was to end up selling the truck. I took it in to my local mechanic, and told him, "yeah that bulb under the "D" has gone out again, and I need it replaced. He called me a while later, saying that in fact, this time, that it was NOT the bulb at all, but that the board that it plugged into, was corroded! They were able to clean it out, and when they put the bulb back in, it worked! So they did not replace it. Again, corrosion but part of the fact of owning a vehicle that was just OLD. My bulb in my hazard light switch was also burnt out, which surprised me because I did not use it that often! In fact, like others here, I wondered if in fact, it was lighted originally as well! I later realized that it was, but I just never got around to replacing that one. But dash lights go out and I definitely suggest to have them replaced when they burn out.

 

You remember what size led it was? T3,T4 etc? Im gonna be switching my dash lights to green here soon and that would be nice to switch over too.

 

Answering my own question here but its a T4 Neowedge bulb (same as climate control in 01+ trucks) . Any LED of that size should work. I swiped one from a 2nd gen 4Runner and it has a green film on the back since a clear bulb came through as green.

 

Ok so MY OCD kicked in, I checked mine, no light. can this switch be pulled out from the front to access the bulb?

 

Unfortunetley, no. If you take the radio bezel off, you might be able to get a hand back there and undo the wire clip and squeeze the tabs and push it out (looks doable, I haven't tried it though). But otherwise the piece that goes around the cluster has to come out. If you go that far, may as well replace every dash bulb in the truck.

 

It's easy to pull out if you pull out the switch for the airbag on off/or the blank in that spot. Then you push the hazard switch out from there.

 

Ugh. Don't want to go through that. I have done that already replacing the dash lights with LEDs from Superbright. Never realized the hazard had a bulb. Certainly would have done that while all apart.

 

So, if I take the radio bezel off, then I can pull the airbag switch out?

You can get the airbag switch out with a thin sharp knife. Pops right out.

 

Sorry for the late response. I'm away from my stuff at this moment and I can't check if it was T4 or T3 - I think it is the smaller one but I can be wrong.

But one thing I do remember - most of these LED bulbs don't work out of the box. Most of T4 and T3 bulbs have LED projecting in one direction (perpendicular to the base). Because the bulb is installed in the switch from the side it needs to project light parallel to the base (towards the front of the switch). Most T4 and T3 bulbs will emit zero light into that direction meaning the lighting of the switch will be marginal.

To solve the problem I actually modified a LED bulb by resoldering LED chip to point it into right direction. PITA but doable. I will have some pictures later.

 

Ive got these for my climate control. Fixes that issue.

I tried to pry out the hazard switch by itself, but it was snapped in very securely. I was able to remove the blank cover where the airbag switch is located on non-double cabs by prying from the top with a thin blade. With the blank removed, I was able to insert a trim removal tool that had a bend at the end. I hooked the bend end of the tool behind the switch and was able to pull the tool to make the switch pop out. Once the switch was out of the hole, the bulb was easily accessed on the side of the switch. There's no need to disconnect the switch from the harness. Just untwist the old bulb, twist in the new bulb and snap the switch back into the hole.

 

Thank you so much for saying the bulb size. I've only been able to find the Toyota part number for the hazard switch bulb and it's literally been driving me crazy.
