Can anyone recommend a product to remove rust from powdercoat. I have an All Pro Off Road Apex Bumper, that is about 3 years old, it started rusting last year on top of the hoops. I tested a few areas with 0000 and 00 steel wool and a brass brush. It removed a little bit, but I was only using wd40 as a lubricant. If all else fails, when I have the truck repainted, (as you can see the clear coat is peeling pretty bad), then I will have the bumper repowdercoated. 15830031022293328909511603325840.jpg 15830031533046342991650870076627.jpg 15830031765701771365942822072146.jpg 15830032010847271141802286218063.jpg

I honestly don't know what powder coat brings to the table. It scratches and chips just like everything else. I had sliders on a truck that were p. coated (dumbest thing in the world) and systematically sanded off the rust and rattle canned black Krylon on until they whole under surface was coated. The paint seemed to last better, and was eminently more repairable.

Corrosesl will turn the rust to black Magnetite but you may need to reapply in 6 months

I haven't been happy with the powder coat. I plan on having the truck painted with Raptor Liner and considered having the bumper sprayed as well.

I'm no expert but in this salt bath weather we get up here, powder coat is no screamin' hell compared to good paint. Just my $0.02.

Either the material wasn’t clean for the paint to stick to to begin with or it’s just a cheap paint job. The only way to stop it is have it burnt off, sandblasted and recoated, if you want it right. Otherwise just sand it and rattle can it.

Ya, after reading adnauseum about pc issues, I went with plain sliders and painted them. After 4 months, still look awesome! $50

Rust maint. is exactly why I have been wondering if powdercoating is a good idea. It is annoying to have stuff you can't maintain. With Rustoleum black BBQ paint, it is solid and can be sanded/repainted whenever. But with powdercoating, it is pretty much impossible to match it yourself. And I wonder how hard it is to strip to fix too. I'm spraying Rustoleum undercoating rubberized paint on some engine brackets today, seems like an interesting option for paint as it smoothes out funky home-made parts to look legit. But I don't think I'd want to be stuck with powdercoating on just about anything...?

Powdercoat is good if it doesn’t get scratched, like you said, hard to match and once rust gets under it then it spreads like cancer.
