I guess the consensus is to just not leave anything of value in the car. I just hope that whoever took it gets sodomized by a porcupine or something. Scumbags.

just an FYI, the rear slider is a joke as far as security goes. Takes literal seconds to open it.

So any ideas as to how they got in? The rear slider is a real possibility, if it isn't secured it takes a few seconds to defeat, also easy to shut when your done

I'll guess this ticket you speak of is just a fine, and probably a good bit less than $950..

I grew up in a very well to do town and it happened there often too. And I'm on the other coast.

    Wonder what HR would do..

@mattgecko sells lockbars, cheap and effective. One of the best mods I did on my truck

Best. Advice. Ever. I learned it when I was 17. Plus, you are lucky that they didn't break your window or door lock. Also, if your live in bad enough neighborhood, sometimes homeless people will break your into your car just to sleep in it. Grrrr....

I probably shouldn't go here... but since I was curious...

"A misdemeanor conviction for petty theft in California carries a sentence of up to six months in county jail, a fine of no more than $1,000, or both. (Cal. Pen. Code, § 490.)"

Now, of course, "To gain a conviction in cases of car burglary, prosecutors must prove the vehicle was locked at the moment the theft occurred. That’s often a challenge — and a nonsensical one."

So yeah, sucks ass. But, I'm doubtful if any other state has some magical policy that deters crack heads...

Thats wild, having to prove your vehicle was locked....how does that affect the fact that they illegally entered private property and stole from it????

I would put money on this as well. I'm not saying a replay attack *couldn't* happen... but.... odds are it's someone who's good with a slim jim. But that doesn't sound as scary or cool. It's not crazy rocket science to do a lot of replay attacks, but there's a lot of variables as well, not to mention 90% of your time will be camping with an antenna or having them setup capturing data, going through all of that, some shit just won't work because of reasons, all to what... take a leatherman from someones Tacoma? If you have that skill set and patience, it's gonna be for something more than a leatherman from a tacoma. fuck it, I'd take the tacoma.

Whoever posted about the keyfob for remote start though, that I did lol at. Easily easily could see that happening. Hell, I could start my roommates car when he was on the couch watching tv because it was just close enough. Again, that's kind of a 0 skillset 100% dead luck thing going on.

Ditto here. I had an an early 80s 3 series, power locks, no fob, not even from the factory. Locks were just old and half seized up, you *could* use the key to lock it, but man.. felt like you might snap the thing. No amount of graphite or anything else would make it better. Just decided never to lock my car, and never leave anything good in it. All I had was a really shitty discman connected to a tape deck. the discman wasn't even good, every few days you would have to pry at the motor to lift it back up again so the cd would spin again. Figured with my tint, I would rather someone open my door, find nothing of value, and leave, rather than smash a window.

Well, sure as shit one day I get in my car and my discman is gone. Didn't really care about that one obviously. Maybe an odd $1 or two of change was gone, as well as my pack of smokes. Again, whatever... better than a broken window. Then... oh shit.... My $900 scan tool I forgot all about that was on the backseat..... Oh good. That was still there in it's case. Got lucky.

Get a ravelco, that will keep someone from stealing your truck. Park in a garage if you have one.

Short of that if somebody wants something inside your truck they are going to break the window or jimmy open the door and take it. Doesn't matter what alarm you have, they usually just do the smash and grab. Lesson learned, hide your shit even if it doesn't seem that valuable. Sucks but this is the world we live in. I'd love to catch someone in the act trying to break into my car, I'd let the tire roll over them

Same obscurity security could be had by hooking a spst switch to basically any wire that would stop the vehicle from starting. Still won't beat a tow truck. Get something with GPS. Still won't beat a GPS jammer. And on... and on... and on....

Car alarms will deter most thieves as there are too many other vehicles that don't have an alarm. Never leave anything of value in plain sight, including change.

Typically they don't use that device anymore and it is much more common that they use a device that automatically spits out coded frequencies until the right code is put out. They stopped using the device that you're referring to when alarm companies created alarms that go through several different codes before going back to the original code. Even if they capture the code that you last used to arm or disarm the alarm that same code won't work until it is back in its correct order so capturing the code is pretty much useless nowadays.
