15% Ethanol??????

I thought the govt. wanted gas mileage to go up. Higher percentages of ethanol will lower gas mileage, not to mention since most American made ethanol is made with corn, food prices will most likely go up. I'm not the brightest bulb in the lamp, but this doesn't make sense to me.

I only fill up my truck with ethanol-free 93 at the Shell here in town that has it.

We grow way too much fucking corn. Hence farm subsidies. This is essentially a complicated subsidy. They're getting more corn sold by turning some of it into fucking horrible gas.

 

i used to use shell gas all the time in my taco, but in the past three weeks or so all the shell stations in my area started adding ethanol...i have no clue why, the other ethanol free station in my area, valero, also started using ethanol all of the sudden....is there a reason shell started using ethanol all of the sudden...did i miss something here...i have no where left to go

 

In some states it's required by law.

Most gas stations do it because ethanol blends are less expensive and they can charge the same they were charging before = more cha-ching.

thanks nothing is listed in my area...there is one tiny independant station left in my area....i'm guessing pa just passed something recently then...so does that mean if it has become state law then this independant station will they have to switch as well?

 

Lots of places switch about this time of year to the "winter blend" because it meets the reduced emissions standards

 

This benefits nothing and nobody except those with the power to get it implemented, i.e. big oil (who has a big stake in turning oil into food (e.g., large scale corn farming)) and big food (ConAgra, Archer Daniels Midland, etc.), not good for consumers, or the country. Cheaper, short term maybe, long term, disastrous. Typical big business politics and scientifically clueless bobblehead voters.

 

In my state, it is impossible to find a non 10% ethanol pump. That stuff is garbage. My mileage went down close to, what do you know 10% after I switched. If 15% goes through, it will be even worse.

The snowblower I bought last year clearly states on the gas cap "Do not exceed 10% ethanol". I hope this doesn't go through.

 

You guys should get a test kit and test the fuel in your area. Here it ends up being like 30-40%..

 

How do you test it? I live in Washington also.. I have noticed, when I buy gas at a grocery store (albertsons) my mileage is around 17 at best. When I fill up with Chevron, I get 18.5. No joke. I track my mileage religiously.

30 to 40% sounds like a stretch to me, but if there is an easy way to test it, i will do it for sure.

Biodiesel: 33

IMO, algal biodiesel is what is going to save our behinds when the oil starts running out. It has one of the best energy densities of all renewable fuels. Not that I think we're going to run out of oil soon, but it is a finite resource.

EDIT: Biodiesel also has no sulfur in it, so running that you might even pass california's emission requirements in smaller vehicles.

Here in central Pa. you can't but gas without 10% eth. blended in... Now the marine industry is pushing Sta-Bil Do car/trucks require that? what about the plastic components that are exposed to fuel... with they soften like they did in the 80's

A couple of things I've learned over the course of a couple of years looking into this kind of stuff:

Food prices go up if we use more corn? Maybe. Of course the government pays farmers to grow corn more than anything else, keeping it pretty stable. But what causes food prices to really go up? The cost of a barrel of OIL.

If oil goes up, so does fertilizer as it is a key ingredient in most fertilizers. More expensive fertilizer means more expensive food all across the board, not just corn. Of course food isn't the only thing affected by the price of oil, as we all know. Plastics, natural gas, gasoline, and everything else interconnected will rise in price.

What do you think keeps the price of oil down? Well first it is what OPEC decides a barrel of oil costs. With no rules or oversight, who knows what those bastards will do with it. Then comes the taxes. Some countries have decided that exhaust fumes are too harmful to our environment, so they have decided to heavily tax gasoline and diesel. Ever wonder why you see all those little putter-boxes they call cars everywhere over there across the pond? That's because that is the only vehicle that makes sense when they tax gasoline in upwards to 30-40%. The U.S. taxes around 8%. Why? Because we fucking love our automobiles. Damn straight too, we should. Automobiles are the device that made this country awesome. Coal reserves put us as a world contender, but use of oil in automobiles made oil production blow up. That led to technology that we take for granted around us everyday, the real reason we are great. That's why the government will continue to bailout automobile companies. We love em, the bastards they are.

So even though we are spoiled in the U.S. on gas taxes, what can we do to keep them down at the same time as using copious amounts of this cheap awesome shit? Ethanol. Think of it like watering down your whiskey with moonshine. If you have tons of moonshine that you don't really like, but only a little of whiskey left and you want to make it last, you water it down a little. Same here on gasoline. Even though there is plenty of oil at this time, there is an end. One day we will run out and we need to make sure what reserves we have. Hell, what if we nuke every oil giving country in a war? Well, then all we have is our reserves left. Then, what if we get in another war, and our use goes up exponentially? Well, then you might be glad we thinned out our stock until we came up with environment friendly alternatives.

You can find the test kits on eBay for as little as $10. You will be surprised with what you find. If you pull out the spark plugs and o2 sensors on the cars around here they are white from all the alcohol in the fuel.
