So this 85 was for sale for a while, I had seen it listed a few weeks retire and the as was still up. After snow wheeling with my buddies in these old lightweight rigs, and barely being able to follow them in the Tacoma, I figured I’d get my own if I can get it for a fair price. it’s not as clean as it looks, there’s some ghetto frame repairs, and some decent ones. The frame needs to be redone from about half way back. Box is all rusty as usual. The transmission was out of it, and had been out for 2 years. He blew 4th gear and gave up fixing it. He had an extra trans and tcase to go with it. Engine is a 22RET. Mated to the 5 speed manual.

I sent the guy a pretty low offer (way less than half he was asking) and he was receptive so we worked out a price that seemed fair(about $900 US). It had a bunch of parts in the back, an ugly topper (sold it right away), and the thing was all apart.

brought it home, put on a flywheel and starter and bell housing. Got it to start...ok since it runs I’ll put the tranny in. Got the tranny in and was driving it 24 hours after purchase. Only thing i bought for it was a clutch. $125. Parts for this truck are cheap. I’ll get some better pics once I wash it. But the thing goes like hell with the aftermarket PCM and programming in it. I think the boost is set to “all of it”.

How much lighter is the pickup than the tacoma? Always wanted an 2nd or 3rd gen pickup.

500-600 lbs or so on a 2nd gen, 200 lbs or so on a 3rd gen depending on the cab and bed configuration.

Well my Tacoma on 35s was 5300 lbs. and it’s close to that still.

2nd gen pickups are like 2500. Less with rust.

Such a badass build man. If only Toyota made the Tacoma a front SA from the factory. Can't do any of these trails in a regular "built" Tacoma.

Ehh... I'm not new to this and I've seen what fully built IFS rigs can do, and sure as hell aint the stuff this guy is doing with his truck.

Absolutely right. I’m still impressed even now with what mine did. If the drivetrain was stronger I’d still have ifs.

Have you forgotten about IFS ultra 4 buggies?! Also, Marlin Crawlers’ BigMike did everything I did except made it look easier.
