I use to change oil for a living. While a few guys were ok most were rejects. When you are paying 9 to 12 bucks an hour you are not getting cream of the crop that's just fact. Go to any fast food place no different. I have respect for people who do the job right and care at least a little.

Yes. I’ve had that problem and also the oil change place where they couldn’t even tighten the drain plug properly and I noticed the enlarging puddle under my truck when I parked it after a (thankfully) short drive.

 

Yep, my 5k service the idiots somehow broke my tpms sensors (all of them). My 10k service at a different dealer they fucked up like 5 of my lug nuts. Now I just do it all myself, no more idiots touching my truck, no more issues.

 

settle down, some of them are truly terrible at what they do. In order to fulfill your white knight status next time you're at the dealership ask for the worst tech they got.... and then defend his work after he screws something up.

usually the hidden gem in having a bad tech work on your truck is you dont know until you need to truly fix something and their screw up adds hours / extra parts to your repair time.

 

"lifetime" fluid - just checked my Gen 3 service manual, it says to replace it at 60k under towing/loaded conditions (camper, hauling a lot, etc), or under extensive idling/short trips sub-32 degree weather.

If 60k is the Toyota suggestion and the payload is only around 1k, why would we keep the fluid for 200k+? The maintenance guide also lists the MTF be replaced at 30k, regardless of towing/loading conditions.

I'll be doing ATF at 50k likely, I have a 5 mile commute in New England, salty roads, and they're saying to replace ATF under loaded conditions when my payload (TRD OR SB) is only 1100 ish lbs. The fact that the average Joe just doesn't need to replace their ATF is just bonkers.

 

Solid idea, haven't been to the dealer since my rear diff leaked. Dont pay attention to other techs, or what they screw up.

 

I did mine at 99k miles and it needed it.... probably 30k miles sooner.

 

I feel what you posted absolutely says the average joe doesn’t need to replace it.

 

Payload is only about 1k. Two full grown adults is about 350 plus lets just toss in 50 for random things. The average joe is just daily driving about 20% max payload. But heavy towing needs it every 60k everyone else never?

I don’t buy it. I’ll be doing atf changes.

 

This would be a much more useful post if it included the step by step procedure to complete the transmission service. I mean, what's the point of just telling people you did it and not showing how you did it, parts/materials, cost?

 

I interesting pics., but i think this way over the top. I've had toyota automatic's since 84, and never had an issue as long as you replace the atf at regular intervals as the vehicles manual states. I drained and refilled my 01 tundra's transmission's pan at every 15k miles. Even with 292 k miles when i sold it that transmission still worked like the day i owned the truck, and they were noted for planetary gear failures. Even my dealer said the 3rd gen tacoma's shouldn't need any transmission fluid change's like i use to do on my tundra.

 

Well, it's very self-explanatory drain it, you pull the pan, clean out the pan, replace the strainer, put the pan back on with the same reusable gasket, pull the fill plug at the top, and put world standard in.

The only thing that's involved is just how you check it. You jumper pins 4 and 13 on your OBD and wait for the d light to come on with it in park.

Pull your check plug if it dribbles out your great if it gushes out allow it to dribble out and if nothing comes out you add until it does. Not rocket science. You can't do that then you don't need to be touching it.
